MS-13 gang member pleads guilty to illegally entering the country

An El Salvador man previously convicted of sexually assaulting a child in Fairfax County pleaded guilty Thursday to illegally reentering the United States after being deported.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Salvador Portillo, 30, a member of the MS-13 street gang, illegally entered the U.S. and was deported by immigration authorities on Oct. 8, 2002.

Portillo illegally reentered the country again and was found in Loudoun County on Nov. 21, 2010.

On Dec. 26, 2010, Portillo sexually assaulted an 8-year-old girl in Fairfax County. He was subsequently convicted of rape and sodomy in a Fairfax County Circuit Court and sentenced to 25 years in prison, according to court records.

Portillo was indicted for illegal reentry on Feb. 23 and was transferred from state to federal custody on July 12.

He faces a maximum penalty of two years in prison when he is sentenced on Aug. 31.

This case was investigated by ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations. Virginia Assistant Attorney General and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Birnbaum is prosecuting the case.

I don’t think the comment policy has stifled the debates here, I think they have calmed them down and have stopped the nutjobs from posting under 13 different names so it seems like they are winning the debate.

I do think the comment policy needs some slight revisions.  The wait time for them to be posted is too long and they should have more advanced methods/software to preliminary approve comments.

If you’re talking MS13-the answer is yes.  However, there have been many gangs in the past and present where the members were legal residents. Bloods, Crips, Asian, Puerto Rican, Irish etc.

Any large group of poor, oppressed people will produce gangs and it doesn’t matter if they are legal or illegal.

CJ are the majority of gang members illegal immigrants?

The unwritten policy of not cracking down on Sanctuary Cities, deporting illegals regardless if they’ve committed a crime, and targeting businesses who employ illegals with step fines and criminal prosecutions.

The Democrat Policy on Illegals is to do nothing and look the other way.

The relatively few comments on this story is an example of how the LTM’s new board policy has stifled debate. A few months ago, before the registration and review requirements, comments on this story would have been burning up cyberspace.

Uh, Citizen Jane…. where do I start.
Just look at what happened last month.

Anyone who says we can protect our children against predators by spending tax money to “round up illegals” wants you to ignore more effective policies in favor of an agenda they won’t admit.

    redcow-

The majority of the illegal immigrants are not gang members.

Ronald Reagan gave amnesty to 3 million illegals in the 1980s and John McCain was working on a bill with Ted Kennedy for a compassionate solution to the illegal problem.

I wonder how you can sleep at night making such one-sided and inaccurate statements.

What policies do they support that “actually encourage illegals to come to the United States”?

ashburnfella -  As for any business using illegals for labor, they should be fined and that amount should be equal to 50% of their gross income reported last year. That way, the cost of fines if caught will far exceed the savings. Businesses are also part of the problem, as they provide the incentive for illegals to come here.

redcow - what about the corporations that are permitted to use the illegal labor w/o any repercussions? do you think we should regulate them?

Red, Since the GOP controls the VA House of Delegates, point me to any legislation that they have introduced that would empower the state to protect our boarder(s). You can’t because the 2012 HoD was too busy legislating personhood, mandated ultra sounds and all about the lady parts.

For that matter, the GOP has controlled the US House of Representatives, provide any Federal legislation that passed to prevent “illegals” entry into the US.  You can’t because the are too busy trying to repeal Obamacare and creating fake job bills that have proven to not create any jobs.

This has nothing to do with Herring, he is only one State Senator.  So get real and get a grip, because the Fox News talking points are painfully flawed.

    @ redcow:

It’s more than a little biased to discuss Obama, Kaine, and Herring just because they are Democrats in the news.  But lets be honest - illegal immigration and MS-13 has been a problem for well over a decade.  If your going to blame Obama, Kaine, and Herring - then you have to expand that list to Bush, McCain, Romney, Cuccinelli, McDonnell, Bolling, Cantor, Boehner, etc.  They’ve done nothing to create substantive reforms to reduce illegal immigration but offer up rhetoric and talking a good game.

You read things like this and wonder how Democrats like Herring, Kaine, and Obama can sleep at night knowing they’ve done nothing to round up illegals and actually support policies which encourage illegals to come to the United States.
