Route 15 traffic initiative yields 1,159 citations and arrests

Four state police agencies on June 15-17 issued 1,159 summonses and arrests during a initiative aimed at preventing traffic crashes along the heavily-traveled U.S. Route 15 corridor.

The initiative “Operation Border to Border” spanned 400 miles along Route 15.

During the three-day event which ended June 17, state troopers from Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland and North Carolina worked together to conduct saturation patrols, sobriety check points and other enforcement initiatives.

The north-south corridor is a popular travel spot for motorists attempting to avoid congested interstates serving all four states, especially during the summer travel season.

During the operation, troopers stopped 509 speeders and 16 reckless drivers. Three commercial vehicles were cited for speeding in Virginia and North Carolina. Seven drunk drivers were arrested in Virginia and Maryland. Troopers issued 56 seat belt violations and 19 child restraint violations. A total of 24 felony and misdemeanor arrests, including two drug arrests, also resulted from the initiative.

No fatalities occurred during the operation. There were three traffic crashes that involved injures, all of which occurred in Virginia.
“Operation Border to Border” targeted 230 miles in Virginia; 106 miles in North Carolina; 37.85 miles in Maryland; and 27 miles in Pennsylvania.
