Snackable dresses lead pair into Ripley’s
Seven years ago Tiffany Tezna and Cassandra May bonded over their love of fashion and candy.
Not necessarily an unlikely combination, but that friendship has landed them in the pages of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! “Download the Weird.”
The two met in D.C. at a fashion designing convention and have been inseparable since.
The Leesburg women combined their skills to make two dress out of thousands of marshmallow Peeps – those sugary lovable candies designed in the form of chicks, bunnies and ghosts.
The women and photos of the dresses are featured on page 193 of the 256-page book.
The women said they set out to specifically enter the dresses for a chance to grace the pages of the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! “Upload the Weird” book.
“I’ve always wanted to make a dress out of candy and it was right around Easter at the time we decided to do it,” May said. “… We thought we might as well and send it off and see what happens with it.”
Each dress consisted of more than 1,000 Peeps and weighed more than 50 pounds.
The dresses were designed over a few weeks, but the Peeps were all added to the final product the night before. The women had to let the candy harden before gluing them onto the dresses.
Tezna is featured in a dress with pink Peep bunnies with blue bunny accents. May wore yellow chick Peeps with blue chick accents.
May, 22, a personal banker for Bank of America by day, and Tezna, 28, who works for a government contractor, say fashion designing is, for now, just a hobby.
But it’s one that this Halloween help bring in some extra cash.
The two designed costumes for little girls, mostly styled after popular Disney character princesses. But they’re most passionate about designing outfits based on science fiction.
“It’s something we both love and adore and we have to have that as our creative outlet,” May said.
The women have taken many costume designing classes in their spare time, Tezna said.
It was around Halloween that they got the idea to make a dress with candy, but opted to wait until Easter. After all, Peeps are much lighter than M&Ms or Skittles.
The women had to discard the dresses after about two weeks. It was spring – and ants love marshmallows.
Tezna said she and May take inspiration for their costumes from everything around them: friends, family and nature. They design fairy costumes based on the seasons.
For now fashion designing is just a hobby. But who knows?
“We try to keep it like that. Anything you try to do as a hobby will eventually be a job. So we try to keep it fun for right now,” Tezna said.
