    Soccer: NASL at a glance

    photo

    Season
The NASL will begin a split season in 2013 featuring two separate and distinct round-robin competitions with the winners of each competition meeting in a single game at the end of the second competition. Teams will play a total of 32 games.

The spring season will begin in late March or early April and run through July 4. Following that, teams will have approximately one month to make preparations for the fall as they see fit. The break will occur during the international transfer window that is open throughout much of Europe, Latin America and North America.

The fall championship will begin in late July or early August and run through Nov. 2. Following the conclusion of the fall championship,  the winner of the spring championship will play the winner of the fall championship for the 2013 season champion. In the event the same team wins both competitions, the team with the second-best record for the full year’s games will play in the game.

    Players
There is no NASL draft. Director of Soccer Operations Mark Simpson is scouting college tournaments as well as hearing from agents of players. Players with expiring contracts can begin signing with the team closer to the NASL Virginia debut in 2014.

    Coaches
NASL Virginia is looking at several potential head coaching candidates. They will be narrowing their search sometime around the beginning of 2013.

    Practices
A practice site has yet to be finalized, but Simpson has reached out to some area parks as well as Loudoun Soccer about using their facilities. Simpson wants to make sure locker rooms and changing areas are available as needed for the team.
