UPDATE: Starplex cinema announces Loudoun Station location
photoThe Starplex theatre, with a 2014 anticipated opening date, will offer 11 screens at its proposed location on Central Station Drive in the “heart of Loudoun Station,” according to developer Comstock Partners.

A mega cinema being touted as an “anchor entertainment tenant” is one of the first major development announcements at one of two forthcoming Metro stations in Ashburn.

Starplex Cinemas has announced an 11 screen theater to be at the center of the residential, retail, office, hotel and transit development.

Loudoun Station, which broke ground last year, is the first mixed-use transit oriented development in Loudoun County.  Loudoun Station is located at the terminus of Metro’s Silver Line extension.

The first phase, the BLVD, including 357 apartments and 62,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space is nearing completion, with the first residents having recently moved in.

Loudoun Station will, upon completion, integrate over 3 million square feet of mixed-use development consisting of more than 1 million square feet of Class A office, 300,000 square feet of restaurants and shops, a hotel, and approximately 1,500 luxury residences.

The Starplex theatre, with a 2014 anticipated opening date, will be located on Central Station Drive in the “heart of Loudoun Station,” according to developer Comstock Partners.

Primarily based in the Midwest and Western United States, Starplex Cinemas is headquartered in Dallas, Texas and currently operates 22 theatres and 235 screens around the country. The Loudoun Station location will be Starplex’s first in the mid-Atlantic region.

“Starplex offers first-run films in state-of-the-art auditoriums at affordable prices,” states a release from Comstock.

Starplex will compete with a several already established and upcoming theaters in the Area.

Regal Cinemas announced earlier this year, they will open a new state-of-the-art theater at Dulles Town Center. Regal also owns the Regal Countryside Theater currently being used in Sterling. Regal also owns the relatively new Fox Cinemas in Ashburn.

One Loudoun has announced a new theater of their own to be included in their mixed-use development on Route 7. Their theater, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, just broke ground July 24.

Cobb Theater opened last year just east of Leesburg in the Village at Leesburg shopping center on Route 7.

“We are very excited about this new location and would like to be known as a family oriented movie theatre with affordable prices the entire clan can enjoy,” said Tod Hannah, chief operating officer of Starplex, in prepared remarks.

Phase I of the Silver Line Metro expansion to Dulles Airport and Loudoun County is almost 80 percent complete, with service through Tysons Corner to Reston scheduled for late 2013. The recently approved Phase II of the Silver Line will extend Metro service from Reston to Dulles Airport and into Loudoun County, terminating at Loudoun Station. The Loudoun Station Metro Facility is scheduled for completion in 2018.

Andrew Sharbel contributed to this report.

Do we really need another theater in Loudoun? Wont this be number 5 after the Alamo opens?

No way will all these theaters stay in business….Regal in Sterling, Regal in Brambelton, Cobb in Leesburg, Alamo Drafthouse coming to LoudounOne and now this one?  Tally Ho in Leesburg is already closing due to technology issues with the building’s owners.

Guess my comments were permissible once I mentioned the competition!

Looks like my comment about the obvious ad placement was censored.  Leesburg Today has basically the same story up with the same ads.

Our local newspapers disappoint yet again.

Nice advertisements at the bottom of the “news article”.  How much did they pay for those???

This deal had to be in the works for many months, if not years.

That said, the BoS July 3rd Metro decision probably acted as a catalyst to ensure Starplex signed the deal with Comstock Properties.

Looks nice. Hopefully the added number of screens in Loudoun forces ticket prices down. $11/ea for Cobb 12 tickets to see the Dark Knight. I’ll wait for the DVD.

Metro is bringing business to Loudoun already!
