The Greater Loudoun Lions were unable to hold leads of 3-0 and 6-4 and eventually lost 8-6 to Vancouver (Wash.) on Tuesday night in the 14-year-old Babe Ruth World Series at Fireman’s Field in Purcellville. The loss ended the Lions’ chances to advancing out of pool play to the single-elimination playoffs.
Greater Loudoun concludes the tournament with a 1-3 record in four pool play games. The Lions defeated Bryant (Ark.) 4-2 in their World Series opener Aug. 21 before dropping consecutive games to Waite Park (Minn.), Arlington (Mass.) and Vancouver (Wash.) over the next three days.
Tuesday’s game started more than an hour behind its 8 p.m. scheduled start time and finished just a few minutes before midnight. Greater Loudoun produced five hits and committed three errors in the game, compared to Vancouver’s 12 hits and two errors.
Shorstop Brandon Grayson was named Player of the Game for the Lions. Grayson tripled to lead off the third inning and scored three of Greater Loudoun’s six runs.
Jake Lewis garnered Player of the Game honors for Vancouver (2-1). Lewis pitched six-plus solid innings of relief to earn the win on the mound. He also had three hits at the plate, including a pair of doubles.
Reid Frazier, the winning pitcher in Greater Loudoun’s victory over Bryant, started Tuesday’s game and exited after five innings with the game tied at 6-6. Ethan Carlyon pitched the final two innings, allowing two runs in the sixth to take the loss.
Catcher Josh Sweet drove in two runs and also scored a run for the Lions. AJ Bourscheid, Danny Pugh and Frazier each had an RBI, while Brandall Peters and Lorenzo Calderon both scored a run.
The Babe Ruth World Series continues through Aug. 28 at Fireman’s Field. Pool play wraps up Wednesday with the playoffs contested Thursday through Saturday. Click here to follow the tournament’s progress.
