U.S. Sen. Jim Web (D-VA) announced today he will not seek re-election to a second term in office.
Webb praised his staff and said he was satisfied with his work in the U.S. Senate.
“It has been a great and continuing privilege to serve in the United States Senate. I am very proud of my talented and dedicated staff, which has worked tirelessly to resolve the issues on which I based my candidacy, and to protect the interests of all Virginians in this national forum,” Webb said in a statement.
Webb’s announcement opens the door for Republicans who are hoping to gain the seat.
Former Sen. George Allen already has entered the race for Webb’s seat as well as Tea Party activist Jamie Radtke.
In a statement issued shortly after Webb’s announcement, Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) praised Webb’s military service, work on behalf of veterans, and dedication to public service.
“Senator Jim Webb has spent his life serving our Commonwealth and our country. As a young Marine he bravely served on the front lines in Vietnam. Later he served his nation in the Reagan Administration, including a stint as Secretary of the Navy. Most recently his public service has come in the field of politics, representing the people of Virginia as a United States Senator. He cares deeply about this nation, and our future. I applauded his leadership in passing the Post-9/11 GI Bill expanding education benefits to veterans. I greatly appreciated his partnership and leadership in addressing the proposed closing of Joint Forces Command. Jim Webb puts his country first, and I thank him for the public service he has long provided, while looking forward to the continuation of that service, albeit in a different capacity, in the years ahead. I wish him, his family and his staff the very best.”

Skip over the goofy comments by the “George Allen/Glenn Beck/Let Others Do My Thinking for Me” crowd and read what Frank J has written. Sums it up well.
@The Professor:
“I had no idea so many experts in Constitutional Law frequented the LTM comment section.
We should count ourselves lucky that these Constitutional experts within our community took the time from their busy schedules of teaching law to share their insights”
Just a little bit arrogant.
Obamacare has been declared unconstitutional by the courts. Now we just have to wait for the final word from the US Supreme Court.
Smart man. Knows he can’t win. Not much of a hero.
Taking personal responsibility, for those who pontificate most about the need for others to adhere to it, is an act of humility. Doesn’t one have to accept one’s current condition as one they deserve to take responsibility? Isn’t the next step to take an objective evaluation of oneself before finding others or external sources for blame?
Funny how Republicans have everything and everyone else to blame for the state of things like liberals, unions, government workers, media except for FOX, etc etc.
Of course, it wouldn’t dream of insinuating that all these people slamming Jim Webb on this page brought this to mind…..
“Running Webb against a conservative would be akin to the Democrats starting a foot race several yards behind.”
You mean the bumbling idiot he beat once already? Allen brought nothing to the table then, and certainly doesn’t now.
If anything, it is because the electorate in Virginia are easily fooled. You can see the intelligence on here everyday. Apparently the Obama health care plan has already resulted in mass layoffs. I guess they haven’t been reported due to the liberal media right guys? Rush and Beck are telling you how it is. Reagan did nothing but good. TARP was 100% a result of Barack Obama. Repealing Glass-Steagal had nothing to do with the financial meltdown. Tax cuts for the rich result in spending and a stronger middle class. I think my brain rotted just from typing these talking points people have somehow bought into despite the lack of any facts to support them.
Enjoy voting for another bumbling buffoon who followed the path his Daddy cleared for him to be successful. That always works out well for America.
While there is little doubt that Senator Webb was an American hero during the Vietnam Era, and is a very accomplished and intelligent person, I am still happy to see him decide to not seek re-election.
While I agree with some of his thoughts and positions—such as those supporting the Second Amendment, there are plenty of areas where his views and actions did not match the majority of those he claims to represent. The most notable of these include his vote to support ObamaCare, one of the most flawed pieces of legislation to ever be considered in the halls of Congress, and his vote to waste billions of taxpayer dollars on TARP.
While I’m sure that Senator Webb will never openly admit that he’s not seeking re-election because he would likely lose the seat by a wide margin, I’m sure that thought is at the forefront of his mind. He’s a smart man; there’s little doubt he realizes that many Virginians don’t like his lock-step support of key Obama policies, and that translates to poor numbers at the polls.
It’s also likely that the DNC asked him to consider not running as well. After all, it’s easier to put up a candidate without a bad record than it is to run a candidate with one. Running Webb against a conservative would be akin to the Democrats starting a foot race several yards behind.

Christmas in February!!!!!!
Webb voted for an unconstitutional healthcare law and buys into the hockey stick science crowd. I’m glad he’s going. Republicans will take back both Senate seats in due time. Virginians got a good taste of the centrist Obama and have rejected him and his ilk…it truly is a blessing to see another leftist bite the dust.
I liked that Webb was such a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment. It’s hard to find a democratic senator that supported that fundamental right more. However, I lost a lot of respect for him when he supported the unconstitutional Health Care bill. The Federal Govt does not have the power under the Constitution to force people to buy a product, and Webb should have known better.
I appreciate his service but I’m happy he’s not running for re-election. I disagreed with his progressive positions on health care, etc.
I’ve said many times, I’m not thrilled with George Allen but Webb had to go.
I’d like to see Corey Stewert in that seat.
This was Jim Webb out for himself. Do a term in the senate, make some high up friends, then “retire” to the boards of several large defense corporations.
I am glad these voters like the guy who thinks a man who has served his country like Webb is a bum are typically white guys in the 50s and 60s. The good news is they are probably out of the picture in a decade or so. Maybe America can start picking up the pieces.
Seriously, if you’d rather have a party line shill like every other Senator instead of Jim Webb than you are part of the problem. The guy said what he thought, even if it ruffled the feathers of the DNC brass when he spoke out against government diversity programs. It is probably why he is retiring, he realizes he can’t beat the cesspool in the Senate.
I guess you don’t get those stories when your “news” only comes from one source.
If you ever wondered how Jim Webb (bum and bad rubbish) earned his Navy Cross, here is the answer:
The Navy Cross is presented to James H. Webb, Jr., First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company D, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division (Reinforced), Fleet Marine Force, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam.
On 10 July 1969, while participating in a company-sized search and destroy operation deep in hostile territory, First Lieutenant Webb’s platoon discovered a well-camouflaged bunker complex which appeared to be unoccupied. Deploying his men into defensive positions, First Lieutenant Webb was advancing to the first bunker when three enemy soldiers armed with hand grenades jumped out.
Reacting instantly, he grabbed the closest man and, brandishing his .45 caliber pistol at the others, apprehended all three of the soldiers.
Accompanied by one of his men, he then approached the second bunker and called for the enemy to surrender. When the hostile soldiers failed to answer him and threw a grenade which detonated dangerously close to him, First Lieutenant Webb detonated a claymore mine in the bunker aperture, accounting for two enemy casualties and disclosing the entrance to a tunnel.
Despite the smoke and debris from the explosion and the possibility of enemy soldiers hiding in the tunnel, he then conducted a thorough search which yielded several items of equipment and numerous documents containing valuable intelligence data. Continuing the assault, he approached a third bunker and was preparing to fire into it when the enemy threw another grenade.
Observing the grenade land dangerously close to his companion, First Lieutenant Webb simultaneously fired his weapon at the enemy, pushed the Marine away from the grenade, and shielded him from the explosion with his own body.
Although sustaining painful fragmentation wounds from the explosion, he managed to throw a grenade into the aperture and completely destroy the remaining bunker.
By his courage, aggressive leadership, and selfless devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Webb upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
You idiots need to think a minute before you call people bums and rubbish. Webb is the finest America has to offer.
Nice Try Frank R. Despite the exemplary service to the country you have so accurately outlined, people on the far right want to call Webb a “bum” and “bad rubbish” because he doesn’t agree with them on every point.
And we wonder what is wrong with America.
He voted for health care and all the other Reid crap, good riddance to bad rubbish.
To the GOP voting idiot who characterized Webb as some freeloader, the man has served his country for many years before being a Senator. Let me remind you of his resume:
1968 graduate of US Naval Academy
A Viet Nam vet, serving with the Marine Corps until 1972 and earning a Navy Cross and two Purple Hearts among other decorations along the way.
Was an Asst. Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs under Reagan.
Was Secretary of the Navy under Reagan, and resigned rather than take the Navy in a direction he didn’t agree with.
He has a JD, published as an author and won an Emmy for work as a filmmaker covering Marines.
Now he steps aside after one term as a Senator. Which arguably, is the way manner many of the Founders envisioned the Senate.
Don’t like his politics? Fine, but show me how you, George Allen, or anyone else has done more service for their country and done it the right way by not compromising what they believe for political points or a good sound bite.
America would be a lot better off if we had more people like Jim Webb in positions of power. Too bad there are so many idiots out there like you who will continue to accept lackluster boneheads like George Allen and act like they are exactly what we need.
I’ve met and spoke to both Allen and Webb. Webb speaks with the authority of having objectively sought and thought through relevent considerations when making decisions. He is a fair, direct and serious man.
Webb never seemed to be a comfortable politician. He is genuine and without pretense. Independent in his mind and mindful of high standards of character.
That’s all I’ve got to say of the two.
I heard that the Obama Administration has now decided to add the term “M.A.C.A.C.A.” to the official Democrat Party lexicon. The Democrat definition of the term is: Marxists, Anarchists, and Commies Adore the Current Administration (M.A.C.A.C.A.)
Get under your thin skin, AshburnMan?
It will be fun to watch Macaca Man and Tea Party Man sling mud over who is more conservative. You can bet this Centrist ain’t voting for either of these two losers.
This is good news. The Democrats have a very small pool of candidates to choose from and they are not strong candidates. Republicans are one step closer to taking back the Senate in 2012!
Good, now if we can get rid of the other leftist posing as a “centrist” we will be all set.
Can we get rid of Warner also he is much more of a problem than Webb.
Now we will pay for his top shelf health care for the rest of his life and he will get a large pension too.
Not bad for a six year job, most of us work 30+ years and retire with what we saved and no Cadillac health plan like he receives.
Let me guess, we will see him again as a lobbyist
GOOD BY AND GOOD RIDDANCE
Maybe now we can get a Senator that follows the will of the majority of Virginians and not obama and harry reid.
