Wolf’s push for MWAA auditor clears hurdle

The House Appropriation Committee approved a bill June 19 that would create a permanent Inspector General to audit the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA).

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-10) introduced the legislation in April that would allow the Secretary of Transportation to appoint a permanent auditor for MWAA.

Wolf’s spokesman, Dan Scandling, said that MWAA currently has no routine oversight. “The measure would allow for someone looking over their shoulder,” he said.

Wolf’s proposal, part of the fiscal 2013 Transportation Appropriations bill, will now be considered by the full House. Scandling said a final decision by Congress will likely come by the end of the year.

MWAA, overseer of Metrorail’s Silver Line extension, would have to cover the auditing costs and give complete access to the appointed Inspector General if the bill is passed.

Wolf requested an MWAA audit from the Department of Transportation Inspector General earlier this year. The May 15 preliminary report heavily criticized MWAA for insufficient financial disclosures and lack of transparency. The DOT Inspector General’s office will release the final results of the audit this fall.

Unless Wolf’s measure passes Congress, Scandling said MWAA will not be audited again unless Wolf or another member of Congress requests it: “It could be 10 years before another audit.”

While the Silver Line extension into Loudoun is a huge reason Wolf is attempting to shine some light onto MWAA’s practices, Scandling said a permanent MWAA auditor is necessary regardless: “It’s not only to make Loudoun County feel better, it’s to make everyone feel better.”

BPM.  Come on man, you know Wolf has come out for Metro into Loudoun, including the two stops beyond Dulles.  Are you so desperate you have to start making things up, or changing the words of a Republican elected official to try and score points for your opposition to Metro?

BPM, that incorrect info that Wolf only supports Metro to Dulles was debunked after a blogger said the same thing you have here.

    Remember:

Lovin Loudoun you are 100% correct. Compare the interim report from the Inspector General to the GAO report of 2002 and the same exact stuff is going on although it was promised to be taken care of. A IG does nothing to alliveate my fears about our commitment and liabilities. How does this tell me what it’s going to cost and how it will be paid for. IT MIGHT HAPPEN BUT IT MIGHT NOT! opt out until we figure out the costs and how to pay for it!!!

“He has been a strong supporter of Metro into Loudoun”

Yup…and he parses his words deliberately. INTO LOUDOUN…..as in Dulles. No more.

As to the Independent study, portions are available already ....and they strongly indicate that Loudoun needs to back away ...NOW.

Isn’t this a little late?  Loudoun will have already voted to get in bed with these crooks before any investigation is complete.  Once the contract is signed, we’re screwed, no matter what the inspector finds.  We’re on the hook for over a Billion!

This is exacxtly how you work the problem.  I am impressed with Congressman Wolf’s leadership on this incredible project.  He has been a strong supporter of Metro into Loudoun and recognizes the overwhelming support his constituents are giving him to make this work.  He is actually tackling the problems, looking for solutions, and making the best of it.  Now that is real leadership.  Thank you Congressman Wolf you have a lot of support for your efforts.  Now let’s get this railroad built.

This is EXACXTLY why you don’t crawl into bed with MWAA without pre-determined conditions to keep them from fraudulently using and as yet undisclosed amount of tax money.

Likely it will happen but it may not. Is this another layer of overhead that could be bought by the MWAA? Methinks the Supervisors who have a direct cause and effect, vested in the community would be the most dilligent overseers.
