    Area gymnasts qualify for state competition

    Several Loudoun gymnasts punched their ticket for the 2013 Virginia High School League Gymnastics Championships with stellar performances at the AAA Northwest Region or AA/A State Individual Qualifier meets.

    Freedom placed third in the team standings as the host school at the Northwest Region meet, contested Feb. 7. Alli Gibbs led the Eagles with her fourth-place showing in the all-around. Gibbs totaled 36.750 points on her four events.

    Kerry Stolcenberg placed among the top eight in all four individual events to pace Broad Run. Stolcenberg's top event was the uneven bars, where she scored a 9.150 to finish third.

    Broad Run's Morgan Clear (9.100) placed eighth on the vault to earn a state bid. The top four finishers in the all-around and the top eight finishers in each individual event qualify for states.

    Sara Connors of Briar Woods claimed the all-around title at the Group AA/A state qualifier, Feb. 9 at Woodgrove High School. Connors also placed first on the uneven bars and the floor exercise on her way to an overall score of 36.325.

    A pair of Loudoun County gymnasts - Victoria Miner (35.800) and Hannah Powell (35.675) - claimed the second and third positions in the all-around. Hallie Nichols of John Champe placed fourth and gained the final qualifying spot in the all-around with a score of 34.550.

    Brooke Wivagg (vault, bars), Loren Barber (vault) and Anna Baroody (beam) joined Connors in qualifying for states from Briar Woods. Potomac Falls' gymnasts advancing are Alyssa Del Prete (vault, beam) and Abbey Tsao (beam, floor).

    Loudoun County's Lauren McCollough advanced on the bars and beam, while Tuscarora's Shannon Keye earned a spot on the vault. Woodgrove's Heather Byram and Olivia Becker both qualified for states on the bars.

    Loudoun Valley advanced four gymnasts to the state competition - Lexi Randall (floor), Helen Sternberg (floor), Bria Lloyd (beam).and Katie Mendenhall (floor).

    The VHSL Gymnastics Championships individual competition is Feb. 16 at Centreville High School.
