The Ashburn Post 2001 Knights saw their stellar season conclude July 28 following a 9-8 loss to Lynchburg Post 16 in the American Legion state baseball tournament at Liberty University.
The one-run defeat was the second loss for the Knights’ in the double-elimination tournament. Ashburn scored seven straight runs to turn a 5-0 deficit into a 7-5 lead against Lynchburg, but could not hold on. Lynchburg plated the winning run in the ninth inning.
Ashburn, who went undefeated in winning the District 16 tournament, split their first two games of the state tourney. The Knights dropped their opener, 7-4, to eventual state champion Greenbrier Post 280 before defeating Roanoke Post 3 by a 5-2 margin.
Greenbrier will represent Virginia in the Southeast Regional tournament Aug. 4-8 in Sumter, S.C.
