Battlefield wins Cedar Run golf tourney, Broad Run earns region bid

Battlefield High School shot a four-player total of 299 for 18 holes to handily win the team championship at the AAA Cedar Run District golf tournament Sept. 15 at 1757 Golf Club in Dulles. Broad Run shot a combined total of 320, good for runner-up honors and the district’s second bid into the Northwest Region tournament.

Freedom (328) placed third, followed by Patriot (347) and Osbourn (413). Stonewall Jackson did not field a full team. Chad McCann of Stonewall Jackson was the tourney’s low medalist with his stellar round of 71.

Two Battlefield golfers - Thomas Fricke and PJ Leonard - held down the second and third spots with rounds of 73. Broad Run was paced by Sloan Meadows and Desiree Razon in fifth and sixth places with matching rounds of 75.

Despite falling a little short of qualifying as a team, Freedom qualified three individual golfers for regionals. Billy Ferrell, who placed fourth individually with a round of 74, along with Duncan Walter (80) and Phil McQuitty (85) earned region berths.

The 2011 Northwest Region tournament is Oct. 3 at Westlake Golf & Country Club in Hardy, about 20 miles southeast of Roanoke.
