    Broad Run boys place third at Battlefield Relays
    The Broad Run Spartans began their 2013 track and field season with a solid effort at the Battlefield Relays, contested March 16 at Battlefield High School in Haymarket. The Spartan boys placed third and the Spartan girls finished sixth in the 20-plus team event.

    Fauquier High School placed first in the boys and girls competition, while host Battlefield earned runner-up honors on the boys and girls side. Broad Run totaled 50 points to finish 18 points behind Fauquier in the boys standings, and the Spartans accumulated 31.5 points on their way to a sixth-place girls effort.

    Darion Bunting produced a pair of top five individual finishes to spark Broad Run. Bunting was third in the triple jump relay (41-6) and finished fourth in the long jump relay (19-10.5).

    Broad Run's Alex Salgado was the runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles (15.56), Chad McAuslin tied for second in the high jump relay (6-0), Jake Walker placed fourth in the discus throw relay (113-9) and James McIntyre was fifth in the triple jump relay (40-8.75).

    Potomac Falls gained a 14th place finish in the boys standings. John Deker delivered the Panthers' top individual performance with his fifth-place showing in the 1,600 run (4:52.39).

    The Panthers also placed among the top five in three relays. Everett Quirk, Jacob Turner, Matthew Wajsgras and Anthony Rodriguez-Bonilla won the 1,600 relay (3:50.93) at the freshman-sophomore level.

    The trio of Jordan Ferbrache, Kevin Ryan and Matt Celsa combined with Tommy Fort to finish third in the distance relay (11:14.06). The same trio teamed with Ethan Pacifico on a fourth-place showing in the 6,400 relay (19:32.13).

    Park View multi-sport athlete Cody Horvath finished fifth in the shot put relay (41-2). Horvath is also a football and basketball standout.

    Broad Run's girls received top five finishes from Maggie Novak and Ruthanne Bice in the discus throw relay. Novak (90-6) was third and Bice (84-9) placed fifth.

    Rounding out the list of top five finishers from Loudoun was Jazmyn Bell-Jackson of the Spartans. Bell-Jackson placed third in the shot put relay (30-3.5).
