Broad Run High School scored 10 of the final 11 runs in its Region II semifinal baseball game against Kettle Run Friday night to turn a 6-1 deficit into an 11-7 victory in Ashburn. The win advances the Spartans to the region championship game and secures their spot in the AA state baseball tournament.
Sophomore catcher Joe Delahaba drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, and also blasted a two-run home run in the second inning. Sophomore AJ Powell led the Spartans (21-3) with three hits, including a two-run home run in the third inning and finished with four RBIs overall. Connor Jessop and Patrick Dawson added two hits each for Broad Run.
Towson University commit Taylor Clarke - the Dulles District Player of the Year - earned the pitching win in relief of Powell. Clarke retired all five batters he faced, improving to 9-1 this season.
Broad Run - the Dulles District regular season champion - will host Potomac Falls - the district tournament champion - in the region title game Saturday at 6 p.m. The winner will host a state quarterfinal game Tuesday, while the losing team will start the state tournament on the road.
The Spartans are headed to the state tournament for the second time in the last four seasons. The Panthers (22-3) defeated William Monroe, 5-1, in the region semifinals Thursday to secure their third consecutive state playoff appearance.
I was there and although there were errors on the Kettle Run team I seen some bad calls from the umps in this game - for the Spartans - It was a good game and the Kettle Run team gave them a run for their money. Next year watch out they will come back and beat your arses
