-Quick hit: Briar Woods will attempt to extend the AA Dulles District’s streak of winning a state football championship to four consecutive years. Broad Run won state titles in 2008 and 2009, and the Falcons followed suit in 2010.
For the Briar Woods Falcons to get their claws around another state football championship trophy, they’ll have to figure out a Christiansburg squad coming off a dominant state semifinal win of its own.
The Blue Demons (12-1), winners of three straight Region IV crowns from the River Ridge District, trounced Broadway on the road 35-0 to earn a berth in the title contest for the first time ever.
“I know they have great athletes,” Pierce said prior to having a chance to scout Christiansburg on film. “We just have to find advantages and capitalize on anything they give us. It’ll come down to field position, securing the ball, putting points on the board and slowing down their offense.”
Briar Woods has not been scored upon since the opening quarter of the Region II title game. That streak of 91 consecutive scoreless minutes will be tested against a potent Christiansburg offense featuring dual-threat quarterback Brenden Motley, a Virginia Tech commit.
Christiansburg relies primarily on the ground game, utilizing Motley’s cousin Zach Snell out of the backfield. The Blue Demons’ defense has demonstrated takeaway capabilities as it intercepted Broadway four times.
Unlike Christiansburg, Briar Woods has dealt with the pressure of the state championship stage before.
“The first time was exciting, a new thing,” Pierce said. “This second time around, right now, is even more satisfying because to get back after last year is a great accomplishment for our program…. We’ve had the bullseye on our backs all year and we’re still getting the best out of everybody.”
Colder talked about what a second straight ring would mean for the Falcon players.
“It would mean a lot. We had great expectations at the beginning of the year, and we’re almost there,” the running back said.
