Freedom High School capped an outstanding 2011-2012 gymnastics season with a third-place team finish at the Virginia High School League Gymnastics Championships Feb. 17 at Salem High School in Virginia Beach.

The Eagles won Cedar Run District and Northwest Region titles to earn one of eight spots in the state team competition. Freedom totaled 144.475 points to finish less than four points behind state champion Frank W. Cox (148.075). Washington-Lee placed second with 146.20 points.

Arianna Robinson produced the top score for Freedom in all four events Friday. Shannon Landry, Alexis Chaet, Alli Gibbs, Brooke Landry, Evelyn Soon, Shannon Landry, Karly Hickman and Rebecca McCarthy also contributed to the Eagles’ strong team finish.

While Freedom was the lone Loudoun entry in the team competition - only Group AAA schools are eligible - a large contingent of local gymnasts competed in the Individual Open Championship Feb. 18.

Robinson, the Northwest Region all-around champion, shined again in the state individual competition - medaling in three events on her way to a third-place finish in the all-around.

Robinson’s vault routine was her top performance, scoring a 9.850 to place second in the state. Robinson also finished fourth on the balance beam and eighth on the uneven bars.

Dulles District champion Loudoun County qualified a program-record five gymnasts for states - Victoria Miner, Jessica Drews, Hannah Powell, Annie Asai and Leigh Philbrick.

Miner placed 15th in the all-around, tops among Group AA gymnasts. Miner also medaled on the vault, finishing in a tie for sixth.

Also placing among the top 20 in the all-around were Loudoun County’s Jessica Drews (16th) and Hannah Powell (19th) and Woodgrove’s Amanda Huebner in 18th.
