Freedom High School earned a runner-up finish in the girls standings at the AAA Cedar Run District Swim Championships Feb. 3 at Freedom Aquatic Center in Manassas. Freedom’s boys team placed fifth, while Broad Run’s boys and girls squads both finished fourth.
The Eagles relay team of Stephanie Clarke, Katie Doherty, Maggie Eaton and Katie Johnson won the 200 medley in 1:56.86. Clarke also placed second in the 100 back and took third in the 100 fly. In the 200 free relay, Freedom’s team of Doherty, Clarke, Johnson and Rebecca Mignone placed second.
The Spartans earned first-place honors in three races. Jacob Leidy was first in both the 100 yard fly and the 100 yard back. Not only did Leidy post his best times of the season, his 100 fly time automatically qualifies him for states. Caroline Ruttenburg won the 200 free, earning her first district title.
Alan Horback earned runner-up finishes in the 50 free and 100 free, along with a pair of runner-up relay finishes with Leidy, Michael Kopecky and Jack Morrisoe in the 200 free and Leidy, Morrisoe and Adrian Bailey in the 200 medley.
Top swimmers will compete at the Northwest Regional Championship on Feb. 10, once again at Freedom Aquatic Center.
