Freedom High School finished as runner-ups in both the boys and girls races at the AAA Cedar Run District cross-country meet, held Oct. 20 at Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg.

Battlefield - led by individual champions Haben Zemichael (16:35) and Nicole Carter (19:21) - occupied four of the top six positions in the boys race and four of the top five spots in the girls race to convincingly win both team titles.

Freedom’s boys were led by Thorpe Lichtenberg (16:42) in second place. Joe Sibalik placed fourth for the Eagles, while Christian Reusche finished 13th and Tyler Lichtenberg was 14th.

Broad Run - paced by Gurjeet Chinayna in seventh place and Andrew Hayden in 11th - finished third in the boys team standings.

Freedom placed its top five female runners in the top 15 overall. Siobhan O’Toole (20:37) was second, followed by Callie O’Connell in seventh, Abbey Cademartori in eighth, Emma Johnson placed 10th and Kara Smith rounded out the top 15.

A consistent effort with six runners placing between 19th and 25th gained Broad Run’s girls a fourth-place team finish and the final qualifying spot into the AAA Northwest Region meet.
