Freedom wins Dulles boys tennis title

Freedom High School swept Broad Run, 6-0, in the AA Dulles District boys tennis tournament final May 16 in South Riding. The Eagles also won the district’s regular-season championship.

The 2011 season caps off what Freedom coach John Bell calls a “four-year building mode.” The Eagles improved to 17-1 this spring following Monday’s sweep of the Spartans.

“Last year, we were tournament champs, but Broad Run won the regular season,” Bell said. “Our goal this year was to win both.”

The district final was the third time these two teams faced each other, with each team winning once during the regular season.

However, Broad Run’s victory came in the absence of Freedom’s top player, sophomore Wesley Wong. Wong is undefeated in the Dulles District for two years and already holds the Freedom High School record for individual tennis wins.

Wong faced Broad Run senior Kevin Chang (14-3) in a highly-anticipated match Monday, winning both sets 6-1, 6-4. Wong and Chang enter the singles tournament this week as the number one and two seeds respectively.

“I expect to see Chang in the finals again,” Wong said.

Freedom’s Pablo Bordas and Broad Run’s Shyam Srinivasan dug out one of the longer matches of the day at No. 5 singles. Bordas won the first set in a tiebreak before pulling away in set two.

Bell expects more success as his team prepares for regionals next week. “We have a very deep lineup,” Bell said. “I like our chances.”
