Gymnastics: Stone Bridge qualifies for state team competition

Stone Bridge High School will be one of eight schools vying for a state title at the Group AAA Team Gymnastics Championships Feb. 18 at Deep Run High School in Glen Allen.

The Liberty District champion Bulldogs secured their first-ever spot in the state team competition by finishing a close runner-up to Chantilly at the AAA Northern Region meet Feb. 10 at Lake Braddock High School.

Senior Tori Severin led Stone Bridge at the region meet with her third-place finish in the all-around. Tricia Grywatch, Shelby Keye and Amy Fissmer also produced top eight finishes in one or more events for the Bulldogs.

Severin, Grywatch, Keye and Fissmer also qualified for the State Individual Open Championships, set for Feb. 19 at Deep Run.

With only some of Virginia’s public high schools fielding gymnastics teams, the state team competition is open to Group AAA schools while the individual competition is open to gymnasts from Group A, AA and AAA schools.

Loudoun Valley’s Jessica Bramhall scored a splendid 9.7 on her floor exercise routine at the AAA Northwest Region meet Feb. 11, placing first in the event and earning a spot at states.

Several Loudoun gymnasts earned a spot in the open competition through the Group AA/A state qualifier meet, held Feb. 12 at Park View High School.

Leading that list are Freedom’s Kaylee Annello, Loudoun County’s Jessica Drews and Woodgrove’s Amanda Huebner, who placed second, third and fourth respectively in the all-around.

Drews placed first on the floor exercise with a score of 9.425, while Huebner was best on the vault with a 9.350 score. Annello placed seventh or better in all four of her events.

The top two teams from the Northern and Northwest region meets qualified for states. Individually, the top eight finishers on vault, bars, beam and floor exercise, and the top four finishers in the all-around from each region/state qualifier meet earned a spot at states.

Gymnasts who place one spot short of qualifying will be the first alternate in that event if a qualified gymnast is unable to compete at states.
