John Champe adds gymnastics, boys track coaches

John Champe High School, set to open this fall in Aldie, recently filled two head coaching position in preparation for its first athletic season in the 2012-2013 school year. Former Olympian Hope Spivey will coach gymnastics, and Brandon Sanford will coach boys track and field.

Hope Spivey, Gymnastics

Ms. Spivey comes to Champe from Atlanta, Ga. were she is the owner/operator of Spivey’s Gymnastics International, Inc. Coach Spivey has a storied and rich career in the sport of Gymnastics. She was a member of the USA National team from 1985-1988 and a member of the 1988 USA Olympic team which finished 4th. After her Olympic experience, she became a member of the University of Georgia Gymnastics team from 1990-1994. While at Georgia she was an 11 time NCAA All American and a 5-time NCAA National Champion. Coach Spivey has been inducted in the Virginia sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and the University of Georgia Circle of Honor in 2007.

Ms. Spivey is a graduate from the University of Georgia and has spent her entire life dedicated to the sport of Gymnastics. Champe is extremely excited to have her join our team. She is currently in the process of relocating to the area and once settled in will immediately make in impact in our school and community on the lives of our student athletes.

Brandon Sanford, Boys Track

Mr. Sanford comes to Champe from Freedom where he has been the Head boys track coach the past 6 years. At Freedom, he has been instrumental in 23 All State honor track and field athletes as well as multiple district and region individual champions. Most recently Coach Sanford lead his boys team to the AAA Cedar Run District Championship.

Mr. Sanford is a graduate of Kent State University, with a BA in Health and Physical Education and a minor in secondary education. A dynamic leader, Coach Sanford will also be the Champe Head JV football coach. As a high school athlete himself he was All State in track and field in Pennsylvania and place 13th in the nation at a national track and field meet in Syracuse, N.Y. Mr. Sanford was also the MVP of his high school football team. 

Coach Sanford is extremely excited to create and establish the Champe boys track program and build a solid and productive relationship with the community. His intensity, passion and vision will establish a solid foundation for the Knights program. Mr. Sanford currently teaches physical education at Little River Elementary school.
