The Stone Bridge High School gymnastics team qualified for regionals after placing second behind team champion McLean at the AAA Liberty District meet Feb. 1 in Ashburn.

The host Bulldogs earned an overall score of 140.475 points, more than 12 points ahead of third place Marshall and 2.6 points less than McLean.

“Asking them to do their best and then seeing them do it, you can’t ask for more,” Stone Bridge coach Catherine Morrison said.

The Bulldogs were led individually by senior Kelly McCabe, who qualified for the regional in the all-around with a score of 35.950. McCabe placed top eight in three events, including a second-place finish in beam and a third-place finish on floor.

McCabe’s achievement is especially noteworthy after an ACL tear at the first meet last year eliminated her junior campaign.

“It’s kind of the best thing ever to get everything back,” McCabe said on her recovery. “I wasn’t going to miss my senior year.”

Three other Bulldogs earned individual accolades. Junior Shelby Keye placed eighth in bars and won the floor competition, receiving a score of 9.675.

“Shelby is a performer,” assistant coach Kelly Rosati said. “Her event is a real crowd-pleaser and a team-pleaser.”

Another Bulldog placing on the floor exercise was freshman Molly McCabe, finishing sixth. McCabe also earned a seventh-place finish in vault.

Junior Taylor Galownia tied for eighth in vault and individually qualified in the floor event with a score of 9.150. Floor competitors who earn a score of 9.0 or better in floor qualify for regionals, regardless of place.

Stone Bridge is eager for regionals, and notes a vast improvement from the beginning of the season.

“We are hopeful that individual girls will qualify for the state tournament,” Morrison said. “I don’t think the pressure will phase them.”

The AAA Northern Region meet will be held Feb. 9 at Lake Braddock.
