Loudoun Valley High School limited crosstown rival Woodgrove to two points in the fourth quarter and closed the game on a 14-0 run to claim a 50-37 boys basketball win in front of more than 1,500 spectators Jan. 25 in Purcellville. The host Wolverines handily defeated the Vikings, 68-26, in the girls game to start the varsity doubleheader.
After the Wolverine boys took their first lead of the game at 37-36 on Andrew Traub’s baseline jumper, Valley held Woodgrove scoreless for the final 6:43 of Wednesday’s contest to complete the season sweep.
Cameron Kiani drained a 3-pointer from the baseline off a nice drive-and-dish from Paul Rowley to give the Vikings the lead for good with 5:01 remaining, and John Yoxthimer followed with a 3-pointer of his own on the next possession to push the advantage to 42-37.
“These guys have been mentally tough all year,” Valley coach Chad Dawson said. “They just have been very sound. One of our strengths is they never get rattled. I think the coaching staff gets a little more rattled than [the players] do. They are just calm, cool and collective. Cameron hit that huge shot and I don’t think they scored again after that possession. Our defense is where it’s at for us.”
Yoxthimer led three Vikings in double figures with 14 points. Josh Grimard added 13 points and Jovon Miller scored 11.
Columbia University commit Brad Gilson paced the Wolverines with a game-high 17 points, including sinking a trio of 3-pointers to the home crowd’s delight in the first quarter. Andrew Traub added nine points.
Valley (16-2, 11-1) leads Briar Woods by three games in the win column for the top spot in the AA Dulles District. Briar Woods (12-2, 8-1) defeated Potomac Falls, 77-75, in double overtime Wednesday to keep pace.
Woodgrove (9-8, 6-5) holds a slim lead over Heritage, Loudoun County and Park View for fourth place in the district.
