Potomac Falls’ defense smothered Briar Woods’ offense all night long as the Panthers achieved a solid 50-43 victory in the home gym of the Falcons Wednesday night in Ashburn.
“We’re just trying to focus on defense and rebounding more than ever,” said Panther coach Jeff Hawes after his team held Briar Woods to its lowest point total of the season.
“We just hope to put the ball in the basket enough to win.”
With just one regular season game remaining, the win by the Panthers (10-5, 14-7 overall) solidifies their spot as the third seed in the upcoming Dulles District tournament.
Meanwhile, second-place Briar Woods (12-3, 16-5 overall) falls a full game behind district-leading Loudoun Valley. A win over Potomac Falls would have tied the Falcons with the Vikings atop the standings and put them in position for their first-ever boys basketball championship.
Potomac Falls’ senior center Greg Graves led all scorers, pouring in 21 points when not disrupting Briar Woods’ inside game.
The Falcons were unable to get any offensive flow going throughout the duration of the contest. With post presences Jacob Ryan and Matt Rolin bottled up by Graves and Todd Shanosky, the Falcons resorted to hoisting up 3-pointers with limited success.
Normally high-scoring Myles Tate was held to 13 points. Tate missed Briar Woods’ loss to Heritage Tuesday night due to illness.
Tate’s usual running mate in the Falcons’ backcourt, Correy Facciane, was ill and unavailable against the Panthers.
Despite battling illness, freshman forward Wanya Allen was impressive in executing the two-man offensive game with Graves. Allen was another cog in Potomac Falls’ defensive machine as well, blocking two shots and affecting several others.
“We had some hard practices last week and watched more film than we probably ever have in Potomac Falls history,” said Hawes, whose Panthers lost three straight before their current three-game winning streak.
“As we say, the film don’t lie. Some of the guys got to see themselves not giving the effort we expect. It really helped.”
The regular season wraps up Friday when the Panthers travel to Park View and the Falcons host Dominion. Briar Woods will look to snap a two-game losing streak while Potomac Falls will seek a fourth consecutive triumph.
A Briar Woods win combined with a Valley loss to Tuscarora would elevate the Falcons into a first-place tie. Briar Woods defeated the Vikings in both meetings this season.
