Football University’s Youth National Championship Tournament kicks off this weekend with 64 top youth football teams from across the nation in action. Northern Virginia - featuring 18 players from Loudoun - will begin tournament play Dec. 1 against Central Virginia.
The FBU Youth National Championship will hold separate tournaments for three divisions: sixth, seventh and eighth grade. Northern Virginia will compete in the eighth-grade division.
The March Madness style tournament culminates with the championship game Jan. 6, 2013 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The U.S. Army All-American Bowl - showcasing top high school players including Jon Allen and Ryan Burns from Stone Bridge - will be played on the same weekend at the Alamodome.
Loudoun players on the Northern Virginia team are Mason Gryniuk, Kadin Kightlinger, John Allerton, Russell Blackwell, Jack Candelaria, Joseph Candelaria, Tyler Draddy, Kashmiere Jackson, Johnny Jordan, Cameron Kilgour, Chima Kpaduwa, Chris Lants, Braden Nesselrodt, Andrew Perry, Will Ramey, Daniel Renaud, Blake Thomas and Joshua Vanderhoof.
Gryniuk, Kightlinger, Draddy and Allerton each played on the Virginia National seventh grade team in last year’s national tournament.
The first-round game between Northern Virginia and Central Virginia is Dec. 1, 6 p.m. at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, D.C. Eastern North Carolina will play Maryland in another first-round game earlier in the day.
The winners of the opening round games will square off in the second round Dec. 2, 6 p.m. at Woodrow Wilson. The losing teams will meet in a consolation game at noon.
