Potomac Falls High School bested Loudoun County, 56-47, in a Region II Division 4 boys basketball quarterfinal game Feb. 21 to punch its third straight ticket to the regional semifinals.
Dulles District Division 4 Player of the Year Gregory Graves scored a game-high 23 points for the two-time defending state champion Panthers (18-8). Potomac Falls was able to rebound after a 20-point loss to Loudoun Valley Feb. 17 in the Dulles District championship.
“We had a good, hard practice Saturday, and we respond well to adversity,” Potomac Falls coach Jeff Hawes said. “I thought our guys would respond well after Friday.”
The Raiders (13-11) took a quick lead in the first quarter, following consecutive 3-pointers by Stephen Veschi and Michael Anderson. Three other Raiders added points to wrap the first quarter up in their favor, 14-11.
The Panthers entered the second quarter with a vengeance, holding County to just four points in the frame and going on a 9-2 run to take the lead. Potomac Falls would maintain a lead the remainder of the game.
Potomac Falls started the second half on a 7-0 run, with Graves, senior Matt Galloway and freshman Wanya Allen adding scores. The Raiders put up only seven points in the third quarter, with Tim Herring contributing five of them.
“The start of the second half was key,” Hawes said. “It meant us taking control of the game.”
The fourth quarter was the highest scoring for both Potomac Falls and County as the Raiders mounted a late comeback. Anderson scored eight points and both Veschi and junior Quan Stinger added three each as County pulled within five points with under two minutes left.
Undaunted, the Panthers added 10 points from the foul line down the stretch to solidify the win.
“We fought hard,” Graves said. “I didn’t play well in the championship. I needed to lead my team tonight.”
Potomac Falls now travels to Stephens City to face Sherando in the semifinals Feb. 23. Sherando defeated Heritage, 75-67, in the quarterfinals.
