The Western Loudoun Liberty defeated the Leesburg Girls Softball League Freedom, 14-8, in the first round of the 12U Babe Ruth Softball State Tournament July 7 at Woodgrove Park in Round Hill.
The Liberty, District 8 champions and host team for the state tournament, scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead and never trailed again. The Liberty also plated four runs in both the second and fifth innings.
The Freedom scored seven of their eight runs in two innings combined - pushing three runs across in the top of the first and adding four more runs in the third.
Pool play continues in the 12U state tournament through Saturday with the championship game set for Sunday, weather permitting.
