Broad Run High School alum Holly King was selected by the Washington Spirit in the third round of the National Women’s Soccer League’s inaugural draft Jan. 18.
King, a midfielder, was the Virginia AA Player of the Year in her final two high school seasons. She led the Spartans to consecutive state titles in 2008 and 2009, posting a 47-0-1 record in the process.
In her senior season at the University of Florida, King earned Defensive Player of the Year honors in the Southeastern Conference. King logged more than 7,000 minutes during her four-year career with the Gators.
King was also a two-time member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America team. She played last summer for D.C. United Women.
The Washington Spirit are one of eight teams set to begin play in the newly-formed National Women’s Soccer League this spring. The Spirit will play their home games at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown.
