Broad Run High School’s girls soccer team will be recognized for winning the 2011 Virginia AA state championship in a ring ceremony Jan. 6 at halftime of the Spartans’ varsity boys basketball game.
Players and coaches from all five Broad Run championship teams (2001, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011) will be in attendance. Broad Run girls soccer is tied with Park View gymnastics (1982, 1983, 1988, 1989, 1990) for the most state championships won by a varsity program in Loudoun County.
Broad Run - coached by Claire Collins - won its fourth consecutive state title in the spring, finishing with a 24-1 record and outscoring opponents 91 to 15.

The 2011 VHSL AA State Championship Broad Run HS Girls soccer team will be recognized for their accomplishments in a ring ceremony during half-time of the January 6th Boys Varsity game at Broad Run HS. On hand will be players and coaches from all 5 State Championship Teams ( to acknowledge a record-tying performance by a Loudoun County High School athletic program (5 state championships - tying the state championships won by the Park View Gymnastics teams from the 1980s).
The Lady Spartans completed an unprecedented season in Broad Run athletics - winning their 4th straight title, finishing ranked #1 in the Washington Post Metro area, #3 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and 6th in the nation by MaxPrepsports (CBS Sports) ranking publications.
Along the way, the Spartans amassed a record of 24 wins against 1 loss: scoring 91 goals against 15 allowed - the second most prolific scoring team in Broad Run history behind the 2008 squad that set the mark at 113 goals.
Whitney Church (Penn State) was named Washington Post Metro Player of the Year, joining Holly King (Class of ‘09) as the only Broad Run Girls Soccer players to achieve this title. Both players contributed to the last 4 championship teams that won a record 92 wins against 3 losses, 2 ties including 63 shutouts. Together they hold several VHSL records including a 51 game unbeaten streak; most wins in a season: 24; most shutouts in a season: 20; and goals against average in a season: 0.176 goals allowed.
Current Spartan Assistant Coach Lauren Brewer was on the 2001 State Championship squad who brought home Broad Run’s first soccer state championship under Coach John Sharples. That team recorded 18 wins against 2 losses and 1 tie with 14 shutouts.
The Spartans are led by Coach Claire Collins, who has been Head Coach since 2003. During that timeframe, she has compiled a record of 172 wins, 19 losses and 10 ties (12 year career record of 198 wins against 39 losses and 13 ties). She has been Dulles District Coach of the year 7 times, Region II Coach of the Year 5 times, Virginia AA State Coach of the Year 5 times, Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year in 2004 and NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2009.
The Spartans will be making a run at a fifth straight VHSL state championship and their first AAA title in the spring of 2012.
