Stone Bridge, Briar Woods to play state semifinal games Dec. 1
Briar Woods and Stone Bridge high schools enter the Virginia High School League state football playoffs with undefeated records. Both teams will aim to keep their perfect marks intact Dec. 1 in the state semifinal round.
Briar Woods will host Courtland in the Virginia Division 4 state semifinals, while Stone Bridge will travel to Mechanicsville to face Hanover County in the Division 5 semifinals.
The Falcons are two wins away from claiming their third consecutive state championship. Briar Woods outscored its three regional opponents by a combined score of 107-21 and boast a state-best winning streak of 27 games.
The Bulldogs rallied from a 29-7 first-half deficit with 55 straight points to defeat Yorktown, 69-50, last week in the Northern Region Division 5 championship game. Stone Bridge averaged 57 points per game on its way to winning its eighth regional title since 2002.
In other semifinal action Dec. 1, Heritage (Lynchburg) squares off against Salem in Division 4 and Lake Taylor faces North Stafford in Division 5. The winners of the semifinal games will meet in the state finals Dec. 8.
