Junior Olivia Jane Johnson and freshman Emma Rogers each scored three goals and host Foxcroft came alive with nine goals in the second half to defeat Fredericksburg Academy, 11-8, in the first round of the Virginia Independent School Athletic Association Division II Girls Lacrosse Tournament, May 15 in Middleburg.

It was Foxcroft’s first state tournament victory since 2007, when Foxcroft won in the quarterfinal round before falling in the semifinals.

Foxcroft will play top-ranked Cape Henry Collegiate in the semifinals, scheduled for May 18, 4 p.m at Old Dominion University in Norfolk. The championship game is planned for May 19 at 1 p.m.

Despite outshooting the visitors 11-6 in the first half, Foxcroft played to a 2-2 tie. After giving up a quick goal after intermission, the home team erupted for three scores in three minutes to take a 5-3 edge.

In a nerve-racking or exciting - depending on your perspective - exchange over the next eight minutes, FA pulled within one goal and then fell behind by three when Rogers scored twice in 45 seconds. Again, Fredericksburg drew within one again, 7-6, with 12:01 remaining in the game.

Foxcroft finally took control of the game with another Rogers goal with 11:32 remaining and two by Johnson, on terrific assists by senior Charlotte MacDonald and her sister, sophomore Lily MacDonald for a 10-6 edge. Johnson assisted on the final Foxcroft goal, by senior Lizzie Wilford.

“We were a little worried there for a while,” admitted Coach Michelle Woodruff after the game.

Juniors Elsie Spencer, Carter Ware, Caroline Fout and Lily MacDonald accounted for the other Foxcroft goals. The MacDonald sisters scooped 10 ground balls between them, and Fout and Kate Eagen, a sophomore, controlled three draws each.
