Teeing off with Ian Hildebrand
Ian Hildebrand of Loudoun Valley High School spends a lot of time on the golf course. And the Viking junior has the results to show for his efforts.
Hildebrand has won several high school events, highlighted by his low medalist honors at 2011 AA Dulles District tournament. Earlier this summer, Hildebrand reached the final in the 64-player, match-play style Bobby Bowers Memorial Junior Golf Tournament.
Hildebrand, now is his third season with the Vikings, aspires to play competitive golf in college. His other interests include playing the trombone in Loudoun Valley’s Jazz Ensemble.
We caught up with Ian on the eve of the 2012 Dulles District tournament and asked him a variety of questions:
What is your favorite subject?
Probably English. I like writing and I like studying language. I also take Latin.
What is your dream vacation spot?
Scotland or Ireland. Play a bunch of golf there ... links golf.
How did you get started playing golf?
My dad got me into it when I was about four. I started playing competitively when I was seven. I’ve always been pretty good at it. I didn’t really need any help getting started.
What are you listening to on your iPod?
I’m mainly a 60s and 70s guy. I like The Who. They are one of my favorite bands. And I little bit of music from the swing era, like Count Basie.
Who is the one person you would most like to meet?
Probably Arnold Palmer. One of my dad’s friends met him and he said that he was such a nice guy. I’d ask him mainly about his golfing career and his accomplishments.
What is your most memorable moment as an athlete?
The Bobby Bowers in July. I had a friend on my bag caddying for me and everything just materialized that week. I wasn’t playing fantastic but I was just scoring well and able to get the ball in the hole.
Which celebrity or athlete does Coach Mezzatesta resemble most?
For an athlete, Sergio Garcia. And for a celebrity, I would say Rob Schneider.
Which athlete do you admire most?
Steve Stricker. He has a smooth swing, smooth putting stroke, good wedge game. I just like the way he plays.
What is your favorite meal?
Everything, I like a lot of food. I’d say a good Italian sub is probably my favorite.
Which teammate(s) do you admire most?
Our No. 3 player Trevor Colby. I don’t think he made the team freshmen year. He came out sophomore year and played in a few matches. Last year, he stepped it up a little bit as a junior. This year, he’s just really been a rock all year. He’s had a lot of low rounds and really helped out the team.
What is the last sporting event you attended as a spectator?
[Stephen] Strasburg’s first start for the [Washington] Nationals last summer.
What would be your dream finish to this season?
Hopefully win states as team or make it to states as a team. If not, do something good at states individually.
