Titans win team title, Douglass is top individual at Dulles golf tournament

Heritage High School senior Ryan Douglass needed to sink a short putt on the seventh playoff hole in order to win the individual crown at the Dulles District golf tournament, contested Sept. 18 at Bull Run Golf Club in Haymarket.

Douglass previously had the same opportunities at the fifth and sixth playoff holes, but narrowly missed both putts, enabling Loudoun Valley junior Ian Hildebrand, who matched Douglass’ round of even par 72 in regulation, to keep pace.

Douglass took a deep breath and tapped the ball. The ball trickled in and after nearly 12 hours of play, the district tournament was finally completed.

“Winning as a senior is an honor. Playing against Ian was a privilege. He has a great future,” Douglass said of Hildebrand, the 2011 district tournament champion.

“Patience is key,” he continued. “My dad said to me this morning, ‘just be patient’ and that’s what I did.”

The golfers battled rain and wind throughout the tournament, at times retreating to the clubhouse as the fairways flooded from the storm.

Dominion High School’s group of golfers was able to persevere through the elements. The Titans shot a team score of 312 to add the Dulles District tournament championship to its previously won regular-season district title.

“It’s kind of what I expected with the talent on the team and so many kids coming back,” Dominion coach Jon Abett said. “They played as I hoped they would; they played up to their potential.”

Tuscarora finished second in the team competition, narrowly missing first by three strokes, to earn the district’s second entry into the Region II tournament. The Huskies showed plenty of consistency with their top four players scoring between 78 and 81 individually.

Dominion’s Sam Stilwell, the reigning Virginia AA state individual champion, placed third with his round of 74. But beyond individual accolades, Stilwell hopes this year the entire Titan squad will place at regionals and advance to states.

“This is the best team I’ve been on by far,” Stilwell said. “Last year, collectively the team wasn’t as focused in the district tournament. It was a goal to prepare for the regional tournament in the district tournament.”

The top six golfers from the tournament who are not on a qualifying team will also travel to regional competition as individuals. The Region II tournament is Sept. 27 at the Shenandoah Valley Golf Club in Front Royal.
