BR report - The Broad Run Lady Spartans (7-2, 4-1) overcame an early three-run deficit to defeat the Briar Woods Falcons (5-2, 3-2) by a score of 6-4.

After giving up two runs in the first inning and another in the top of the third, the Spartans plated four runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by junior Kate Sims’ three-run homer. After Falcon junior pitcher Macy Jones (11 K) struck out the first two batters of the inning, Spartan junior Ashley Ferrara and sophomore Dani Cook hit back-to-back singles to start the threat. Sophomore McKall Miller reached on an error that scored sophomore pinch runner Francesca Beller, allowing Sims to come to the plate and vault the Spartans into the lead with her home run blast over the left field fence.

The Falcons tied the game in the top of the fifth, but Broad Run responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Ferrara and Miller that proved to be final scores of the game.

The Spartan’s defense came up big recording bases loaded double plays in both the first and third innings. On both occasions junior second baseman Jennie Himler caught a line drive and quickly threw to junior first baseman Holley Vizek for the double play. Ferrara pitched a complete game for the victory, striking out three.

SB report - The hot-hitting Stone Bridge Bulldogs finally met it’s match on Friday night at Fairfax High School. Joseph Vanderplas, a University of Tennessee signee, tamed the Bulldogs attack - allowing just three hits while fanning 13. Stone Bridge entered the game averaging over ten runs a game but the senior lefthander used a variety of pitches and change of speeds to keep the Bulldogs off balance all night.

Stone Bridge junior Tyler Mocabee nearly matched Vanderplas allowing just three hits while pitching a complete game himself. Mocabee struck out seven Rebel hitters and walked only one. It was that one walk that would prove to be the difference in the game. The walk was issued to the first batter in the bottom of the second inning. A sacrifce bunt moved the runner into scoring position then a line drive to left field by who else, Vanderplas plated the only run of the game.

Four Rebel errors allowed the Bulldogs to threaten a couple of times but each time Vanderplas was able to pitch out of trouble. The most serious Bulldog threat came in the fourth inning when the Bulldogs had runners on second and third with no outs but could not score.

Tyler Lighton, JJ White and Ryan Johnston had the three hits for Stone Bridge. Stone Bridge is back in action next Tuesday at Langley. Game time is 6:30.

-Broad Run 3, Park View 1

The Spartans have not lost a Dulles District contest since April 2009 and they take over first place after beating rival PV in a battle of early season unbeatens.
BR took a 1-0 lead at the half after Will Gooch scored off a Tim Chapman assist with just 20 seconds left in the half. BR made it 2-0 in the 51st minute when Ryan Deutsch cleaned up a Kevin Reitzel free kick from 20 yards out.

Park View cut the lead to 2-1 with Dulles District MVP from a year ago, Jose Miguel Herrea sprung loose off a Geo Hernandez pass. But the Patriot good mood off that goal in the 59th minute was short-lived as less than a minute later, Chapman went down the left wing and played a ball across that was finished by Reitzel. BR keeper Paul Hegedus had several nice saves in the closing minutes to keep BR’s final margin at 3-1.

-Dominion 3, Tuscarora 0

-Briar Woods 2, Freedom 1

BW report - Freedom hosted rival Briar Woods on a very cold April Fools night. The action heated up quickly with the Falcons pressuring the Eagle defense relentlessly early in the first half.

Somehow the ball strayed just wide of the posts on no fewer than 6 clean shots. Finally on a hard fought battle between veteran midfielders, Megan Benitez won the ball and was able to toe it wide to Lina Granados at center field. Granados carried the ball through multiple Eagle defenders into the box before tapping it past a diving Eagle keeper, 15 yards out, for a brilliant open net finish.

The Falcons continued to dominate the midfield and the Falcon defenders shut down every early opportunity by Freedom. Suddenly though, Freedom’s strong lineup strung a few passes together and created a seam to Taylor Gaunt who found the net to tie it up early in the second half.

The tie seemed to raise desire on both sides of the field as play got more fast and more furious. Two yellow cards would be handed out before Lina Granados, on a text book tap and run, would gain advantage on the last Eagle defender only to be taken down just inside the box. With a PK awarded, and the home stands first raucous then silent, the Amazing Lina would convert the PK confidently.

Many runs would come as the pride of Freedom rose up for the Lady Eagles, but each run would end with the Falcon pride shutting down the best Freedom could muster. The game would end at 2 -1 with Freedom knocking hard on the strong, bend but don’t break, Falcon defense. Cloe Barnes came up huge with 10 saves.

Mark your calendars for May 6 as Briar Woods “welcomes” Freedom into their house for a sure to be stellar round two.

-Briar Woods 12, Loudoun Valley 1

BW report - Junior Macy Jones and senior Kristina Karagiorgis combined for the fifth no-hitter in school history as Briar Woods downed host Loudoun Valley 12-1 on a cold and wet Thursday evening in Purcellville.

Jones tossed the first four innings, striking out 11 of the 13 batters she faced, including the first eight Viking hitters. Loudoun Valley managed its first baserunner when the batter leading off the third reached on a dropped third strike, moved to second on a wild pitch and took third on a groundout. Jones snared a comebacker to the circle and
fired to first to end the inning. Karagiorgis allowed one run and struck out two in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Alex Fierszt made a great sliding catch in shallow left
center for the first out of the inning, and Karagiorgis closed out the game with her pair of strikeouts.

Briar Woods (4-1), which pounded out 15 hits for the game, scratched across a run in the top of the first when freshman Casey Forbes reached on a fielder’s choice and later scored on a wild pitch. The Falcons added three runs in the second to open a 4-0 lead. Sophomore Lynn Brantley started the inning with a walk and moved to second on an
infield single by Fierszt. Brantley later raced home on another wild pitch, and Fierszt crossed the plate on a single by Forbes. Forbes later scored on a single by Karagiorgis.

After a scoreless third inning, the Falcons pulled away with four runs in both the fourth and fifth frames. Jones started the rally in the fourth with a one-out walk, and
Karagiorgis followed with a sharp single. After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, senior Kasey Ball came through with a single to plate Jones. Senior Jillian Olson followed with a walk, and Brantley singled to drive in Ball. Brantley’s hit skipped past the Viking outfielders, allowing Olson to score as well. Freshman Caroline Fowler then singled home Brantley to cap the inning and give the Falcons an 8-0 lead.

In the fifth, Forbes drew a one-walk and Jones followed with single. With two outs, Ball roped a two-run double, and Olson added a single to put runners the corners. A passed ball allowed Ball to score, and Olson raced around from second on an errant throw on the play.

Karagiorgis finished 3-for-4, while Ball went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Brantley and Fowler added two hits apiece, and six other Falcons had one hit each.

The Falcons return to action Friday when they host Freedom at 6 p.m.

Senior Goalie Andrew Fawkes, last year’s Dulles District Player of the Year, had 7 saves in 2 1/2 quarters of play, and Freshman Goalie Christian Fochi stepped in for his first Varsity game to make 3 saves.

Tuscarora, in their first year of play, moved the ball well in the wet conditions, getting off 21 shots on the Titans, and played their best game to date, according to head coach Steve Cariello.

Tuscarora report - For the second game in a row, the Huskies’ previously reliable starting pitching could not stave off an opponent’s offensive onslaught as the Tuscarora varsity baseball team fell to the Loudoun County Raiders 13-3 in five innings on Tuesday night.

It seemed at first that the Huskies were on their way to being shut out for a third straight game as the revamped Tuscarora lineup went hitless through the first four innings. Down 10-0 after three innings, the Huskies continued to battle until their bats showed signs of life in the fifth.

After centerfielder Dalton Scanlon led off the inning by reaching base on an error and second baseman Travis Burke walked, reliever Ian Anderson loaded the bases with a single to left and left fielder Brady Kaplan followed with an RBI single to right. Shortstop Bernie Mayflower drove in two more with a double down the right field line, making it three hits in a row and three Tuscarora runs on the board.

The Huskies couldn’t sustain the rally, though, and ended the frame with the bases loaded. In the bottom half of the inning the Raiders answered with three more runs and brought down the curtain on the Huskies’ evening. The Huskies hope to get back on track with more offense and restored pitching this Friday, when they host the Dominion Titans.

Softball

-Woodgrove 13, Freedom 2 (5 inn.)

WG report - With five wins behind them, the Lady Wolverines were ready to take some chances when they faced Freedom Tuesday night at Woodgrove field. Sophomore Alexa Hillyard had her first start as a varsity pitcher and Rachel Harris stepped in as catcher. The team hardly missed a beat as they put away the Eagles in five innings and ended the game with a 13-2 win.

The hits started early with Courtney Bogan and Ashley Cole both hitting singles. This set the stage for Christy Haney’s single which brought in Bogan to score the first run.  With Ashley Cole in scoring position, Delanie Daughtry brought her home with another strong single, and Rachel Harris followed with a single to bring home Christy Haney for the third run. Hillyard’s hit deep into centerfield was too much for the Eagles outfield when the ball was dropped and Daughtry and Harris were able to come home. After Katie Sholl was walked, Amanda Rathjen came home on a passed ball, and that was enough to end the first inning 6 to 0.

Freedom was able to find a weak spot in the Lady Wolverines’ defense when the first three batters in the second inning loaded the bases and the sixth batter, Tsitos, brought home Villagomez to score the first run for the Eagles. The Lady Wolverines were able to score a seventh run when Cole was walked, stole second and third base, and came home on an Alaina Furr double. The second inning ended with a score of 7 to 1.

The third inning saw more Eagles on base. McGrady scored the only run after hitting a single and being advanced by Johnson, Snyder, and Muller. Woodgrove was unable to keep the runs coming and the inning ended 7 to 2.

Freedom’s first three batters of the fourth inning met with strong defensive plays from the Wolverines, especially McGrady’s line drive to right field which was ably snagged by Mackenzie Moler.

The Woodgrove scoring drive began when Bogan and Cole were walked and brought home by a double from Haney. Furr singled and brought in Haney, Daughtry singled and brought in Furr, and Harris singled and brought home Daughtry to score the 12th run. The last run of the inning was scored by Harris when a single by Hillyard brought her home.

The top half of the fifth inning offered the Eagles a last chance to score, but they were unable to get a run. The game ended with a score of 13-2, and the Lady Wolverines will face Heritage in Leesburg on Friday.

-Dominion 12, Manassas Park 1

Dominion report - Claire Drew records 9 strikeouts (has allowed only 1 earned run in the last 3 games) as the Titans beat Manassas Park 12-1. Brittanne Gasser had back to
back home runs.

-Stone Bridge 4, Madison 1

SB report - The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Madison Warhawks by a score of 4 to 1. Stone Bridge played tough defense, holding Madison to 1 earned even though they had baserunners every inning. Allie Brill pitched through 4 innings, and Kelly McDaniel took over for the last 3. For the second night in a row, the Bulldogs faced strong pitching and managed to get the runs across the plate when they needed to.

Offensive leaders were RF Courtney Gibson (3-4, run), 2B Niki Prince (2-4, run, 2 RBIs), 3B Olivia Tatara (2-3, RBI), and LF Erin Dzurilla (2-3, run). SS Cori Prince had a hit and scored a run, and C Beth Lewis had a SAC bunt and a SAC RBI.

Next up for the Lady Bulldogs is Fairfax away on Friday, April 1.

-Broad Run 9, Potomac Falls 8

PF report -  Broad Run handed Potomac Falls (4-2, 3-1) its first Dulles District loss in a wild 9-8 win. The Spartans took a 7-0 lead through five innings but gave up eight runs in the 6th inning, only to score a run in the 6th to tie and then win it in the bottom of the 7th!

After loading the bases in the top of the first inning on three consecutive singles, Spartans pitcher Ashley Ferrara got out of the inning without giving up a run and held the Panthers scoreless through the first five innings. The Spartans scored two runs in the 2nd, two unearned runs in the 3rd, a run in the 4th, and two more in the 5th inning.

The Panthers led off the 6th inning with freshman Tiffany Barndt (2-4, run) singling to left field before the Spartans made a pitching change.  After the next two batters were hit by pitches, the next six Panthers put the ball in play. Junior Peyton Valentine (1-4, run, 2 RBIs) singled down the right field line to score two runs, followed by senior Katlyn McClung (1-2, run, RBI) with an infield single, and senior Kayla Guttridge’s (2-4, run 2 RBIs) 2-run double to right center before the Spartans put Ferrara back into pitch up 7-5.

But the Panthers continued to hit - junior Caitie McClay (2-4) singled up the middle, sophomore Anna Zembar (1-4, run, RBI) hit a line drive single down the third base line scoring a run. After a fielder’s choice and groundout, junior Lauren Fulcher (1-3, run) hit the ball to third which resulted in a two-run throwing error gving the Panthers the lead 8-7.

Broad Run came back with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning after a walk and double by Jenny Kramer (2-4), a runner thrown out at the plate on a fielder’s choice, before Holly Vizek (3-4) singled home the tying run.  In the bottom of the seventh inning, Maggie Betz (2-4) singled up the middle, McKall Miller (1-5) hit into a fielder’s choice, and advanced to second on a throwing error before Kate Sims (3-5) hit a walk-off single up the middle scoring the winning run. Senior Heather Kiefer took the loss for the Panthers.

-Loudoun County 11, Tuscarora 0 (5 inn.)

LC report - In a game shortened by the mercy rule the Raiders scored in each of their four innings to beat visiting Tuscarora 11-0. The Raiders 5-1 (3-1 Dulles District) teamed up for 14 hits in the district contest.

Kiley Jacobus (3-3, 2 runs, rbi), Cortni Reitz (2-3, 2rbi, run, sb, sac), and Erin Ertel (2-3, 2 runs, rbi) had multiple hits for the Raiders. Kelley Duerbeck (1-2, 3 rbi, 2 runs, 2b, sac), Renay Aubel (1-2, 2 runs, bb), Katelyn Packard (1-3, rbi), Courtney Amos (1-2, 2 runs), Sarah Fadeley (1-1, rbi), Alison Coates (1-3), and Laura Mills (1-1) also added hits for the Raiders.

Kiley Jacobus (4 inn., 4 k, 2 hits, bb) and Valerie Evans (1 inn., k, bb,) combined on the 2-hit shutout with Jacobus picking up the win.

The Raiders next game is at home against Heritage on March 31, with first pitch at 6 P.M.

-Briar Woods 6, Park View 1

BW report - The Lady Falcons bested Park View on their home turf in the team’s first meeting of the spring soccer season. The Patriots started strong and equaled the Falcons’ energy in early play before Marchelle Davis fired a BOOM of a shot high into the right corner of Park View’s net from 20 yards out.

Park View answered with a nice approach and solid goal from Alison Kuhn to tie the game 1 – 1. Briar Woods scored again before half when Sophomore Marchelle “Shell” Davis slid a ball past the Patriot’s goalkeeper to make it a 2 - 1 game. Briar Woods’ half-time talk lit a fuse that ignited in a third goal for Shell Davis in the opening minute of the second half.

Alexis Jensen joined in the frenzy with the second BOOM of the night when she fired a strike for a 4 – 1 lead. Marchelle Davis capped her productive night with a career high 4th goal. Falcon’s Captain Morgan McCarthy finished the feeding frenzy by evading two defenders and firing a rocket from the top of the box into the shell-shocked Patriots’ goal.

Park View’s strong midfield created some dangerous moments for the Falcons with through-balls but once again the Woods’ defense held. The Lady Falcons’ back three, led by sophomore Tori Panzica with freshmen Kira Warner and Alexis Haycraft, protected their keeper allowing only 7 shots on goal. Goalkeeper Cloe Barnes had 6 saves.

-Loudoun County 5, Tuscarora 0

LC report - The game got off to a slow but controlled start, with the Lady Raiders showing good ball control, passing and maintaining possession throughout the first half.  Nine shots were taken, but less than half of those found their target, requiring Tuscarora keeper Kylie Flemming to make the first of four saves for the half in the 30th minute of the game.

In the 8th minute of play, Tuscarora sophomore Annie Hartman beat Raider defender Elise LeVan and took a shot from their left side 6 yard line. Raider keeper Kelsey Slack came up with a big save in the early moments of the game. Slack would make 3 other saves in the half.  The score was tied at zero for the first half.

The halftime meeting must have been inspiring. The Raider offense came out early with goals in the 41st and 43rd minutes of play. They scored again in the middle of the half and capped off the evening with goals in the 78th and 79th minutes.

Senior Taylor Boucher drove to the left side corner, beat her defender and placed a perfect centering pass to the 6 yard line. Allison Bills was home to collect the pass and drive it into the back of the net. Two minutes later, freshman Emily Beatty collected a deflected ball in the center of the box and drilled it past the Tuscarora Keeper.  Midway through the second half, Taylor Boucher picked up her second assist for the evening with a well-placed corner kick from the left side. This time, Alana Mackey was home to firmly head the ball past the Tuscarora defense.

Junior Sarah Olivero increased the margin of victory when in the 78th minute of play she received a pass from Emma Sieber from the right side and found open net. One minute later in the waning moments of the match with the game clock stopped, Olivero found a ball deflected by the Tuscarora keeper and found net again.

The Raiders are scheduled to play Potomac Falls Friday April 1st at home.

Softball

-Heritage 4, Freedom 0

-Woodgrove 10, Broad Run 0

WG report - It was East met West Monday night when Broad Run traveled to Purcellville to face the Lady Wolverines in their first ever matchup. The Lady Wolverines, on a roll since the first game of the season, extended their winning streak to five games.

The first inning was scoreless for both teams, and the home fans were a little worried when Woodgrove was three up and three down in their first at bat. No need to worry though, after a second scoreless at bat for the Spartans, Woodgrove saw a double from Christy Haney followed by a double from Alaina Furr. With two runners in scoring position, Delanie Daughtry singled deep into centerfield to bring Megan Roush, pinch runner for Haney, home to score the first run. Amanda Rathjen then singled, but Furr was out in the play. Rachel Harris brought in the second run after her hit to centerfield was caught by a Spartan and Daughtry tagged up and ran home for a 2-0 lead.

After Furr caught a pop fly for the first Spartan out in the third inning, Allie Reid make quick work of the next two Spartan batters, striking out both. It was one more run for the Lady Wolverines when Courtney Bogan singled to get to first, was advanced by Cole, and was brought home by Haney to increase the lead to 3 to 0.

A pop fly to centerfield offered the Spartans a chance to get on base at the top of the fourth, but Mackenize Moler snagged the ball and put away the batter. Daughtry got outs two and three as runners hit, but weren’t able to reach first base in time. It looked like the game would remain close when Bogan was the only one to score in the fifth inning.  She reached first on an error from the other team, advanced to third on Cole’s single, and came home on a passed ball pushing the lead to 4 to 0.

The Lady Wolverines finally let it rip in the sixth inning after another scoreless at bat for Broad Run. The Spartans had their chances, but defensive plays by Katie Sholl, Cole, and Bogan kept them at bay.

As Woodgrove came up to bat, Sholl started off the hits by a strong slap into centerfield. The next two batters, Moler and Bogan, were walked to load the bases. A single line drive by Cole brought in Sholl, and a soaring double by Haney brought in runs by Bogan and Moler. Haney was followed by Furr who brought in Cole for run number eight. After Daughtry was walked, Rathjen hit a hard line drive to leftfield bringing in Haney’s pinch runner, Roush, to score the ninth run of the game.

The Lady Wolverines’ scoring drive, along with the game, was ended when Rachel Harris singled and brought in Furr for the 10th run – enough to end the game early in six innings.

-Stone Bridge 5, Oakton 3

SB report - The Lady Bulldogs defeated a strong Oakton team by a score of 5-3 on Monday evening.  Pitcher Allie Brill secured her 3rd win of the season. Clutch hitting, paired with solid defense enabled Stone Bridge the victory.

Sydney Broderick led the team offensively with 2 hits, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs. SS Cori Prince and RF Courtney Gibson each had a hit and a run. C Beth Lewis (HBP, run), 3B Olivia Tatara (2B, SAC), and DP Katie Bellino (BB, SAC, RBI) also contributed. 2B Nicole Prince had some key defensive plays for the Bulldogs.

LV report - On a cool, sunny afternoon, Loudoun Valley took to the road for the second this year and traveled to Leesburg to play the Raiders of Loudoun County High School.  Both teams came into the game with identical 4-0 records.

The first half saw the score go back and forth as each team would take the lead and there would be three ties. The Raiders would strike first as they controlled the opening draw and went down field and scored at the 24:42 mark of the first half. Six and a half minutes later, senior Caitlin Khosla would tie the score at 1-1 with an unassisted goal. Two minutes later, junior Megan Williamson would give Loudoun Valley its first lead of the game at 2-1 with an unassisted goal.

Loudoun County junior Rachel Solis would tie the score at 2-2 at the 13:49 mark with an unassisted goal. Loudoun Valley answered back with consecutive goals from seniors Michelle Devenoge and Caitlin Khosla to take a 4-2 lead. However, the Raiders would tie the score at 4-4 on consecutive goals from junior Rachel Solis and senior Sydney Hewartson.

Loudoun Valley would score the last three goals of the first half to take a 7-4 halftime lead. Senior Connie Lewis would net one goal while fellow senior Sarah Furr would net the last two goals, both coming in the final 25 seconds of the first half.

Loudoun Valley controlled the draws and the ground balls and outshot the Raiders 14-6 in the first half but managed to lead only by the score of 7-4. Much of this was due to the goalkeeping efforts of Raider junior Jessie Joseph. Loudoun Valley junior goalkeeper, Maggie Beglau, struggled a bit as she allowed four goals on just six shots.

The second half saw the Raiders strike first as Rachel Solis scored her third goal of the game at the 23:25 mark to cut the Vikings lead to 7-5. However, Loudoun Valley would take control of the game as the Vikings scored the next seven goals, with the last coming at the 9:11 mark for a 14-5 lead. A total of five different players would score during this span with Sarah Furr and Connie Lewis leading the way with two goals each.

Raider Sydney Hewartson scored to cut the lead to 14-6 but Loudoun Valley would respond with three unanswered goals, one for senior Kayla Ebrahimnejad and two for freshman Ashlyn DiLoreto, to build the lead to 17-6.  Raider sophomore Haley Knudsen would tally the final goal of the game to make the score 17-7.

Loudoun Valley took 14 shots in the second half against both of Loudoun County’s goalkeepers, Jessie Joseph and sophomore Julia Adler. Loudoun Valley goalkeeper, Maggie Beglau, picked up her game in the second half as she saved six of the nine shots she faced.

The win improves Loudoun Valley’s record to 5-0. The Vikings were led in scoring by Sarah Furr with four goals while Caitlin Khosla and Connie Lewis added three goals each. Loudoun County was led in scoring by Rachel Solis with three goals. As a team, Loudoun Valley scored 17 goals on 28 shots while Loudoun County scored 7 goals on 15 shots.

Thursday, March 31, the Vikings play host to Battlefield for their first Cedar Run District game of the year at 6:00 pm.

The Panthers have the best athletic department in the county. Pound for pound the best programs in the state. Anyone eat at the Buffalo Wild Wigs yet? Just polished off 40 wings and a entire bottle of Mango-Habenero sauce. Delicious

Be sure to watch out for Brandall Peters at Heritage
