Huskies win a pair
THS report: Tuscarora went 2-3 at Madison County over the weekend. Wins were against Fork Union Military Academy (42-39) and Western Albemarle (34-34). Losses against Chancellor (12-57), Nottoway (31-48), and Madison (42-42 - Criteria I).
Dionte Fitts went 5-0 for the day for Tuscarora and Saxon Downs went 4-1. The Huskies are gearing up for Districts on Saturday at Tuscarora High School.

Eagles secure Cedar Run title
FHS report: Freedom finished off its dual meet regular season on Wednesday at the “Wrestle for the Cure” Ashburn Duals at Broad Run High School. This event had a lot at stake, given that a win over rival Broad Run would assure the Eagles of sole possession of their third consecutive District Championship and their first since moving up to AAA Cedar Run District.
Fans did not have to wait long before the feature match up. Broad Run gave their fans something to be excited about as they jumped out to a fast 12-0 lead on the Eagles with a pair of pins before the Eagles Matt Allison broke up some of the momentum of the home team, with a 6-0 win at 126 lbs.
After Tarkan Martin of Broad Run got another win for the Spartans, one of the nights feature matches took to the mat as Broad Run’s Regional Runner Up Neil Hartman against Freedom’s district champion Cody Hamm. Hamm would jump out to an early 2-0 lead and would hold on for a 4-2 win over Hartman. The Eagles would continue to chip away at the lead with Andy Hinrich’s tight two point win at 145 lbs.
After winning an exciting match in the closing seconds at 152lbs, and a dominating performance at 160 Broad Run had a 23-9 lead over the Eagles. However it was Pat Haggerty’s pin at 170lbs which jump started a six match run which would leave the Eagles with a 38-23 win.
The Eagles would finish the evening with 69-9 win over Stone Bridge and a 63-13 win over Briar Woods, in non-district competition.
Valley edges Woodgrove
LV report: Valley defeated Woodgrove last night in exciting fashion 39-34. Winning wrestlers for the team were Derek Raschid (106), Josh Hawk (126), Marcus Oden (132), Zack Gingras (138), Matt Harrington (170), David Garvis (182) and Sid Beyers (220). However, it was John Williams (195) pin in the final match that secured the victory.

Undefeated day for Freedom
FHS report: Freedom capped off a banner week by winning the Brookfield Freedom Duals. In a week in which the Eagles secured at least a share of its third consecutive regular season district championship, the Eagles took to the mat on Saturday in defense of its own tournament championship.
A year ago the Eagles defeated Millbrook in the finals in dramatic fashion, by winning the match in the final bout. Though this year did not provide quite as much drama, the result was the same, as the Eagles marched through the competition.
The Eagles began the day in pool competition as they defeated Handley 65-6, Park View 69-6, and Edison 66-15, before moving on to the semifinals against Orange County. In the semifinal match, the Eagles climbed out to an early 48-9 lead before hanging on to win the contest 48-20. In the finals, the Eagles were able to scrap out a 49-24 victory behind an early lead thanks to Brendan Kammerdeiner, Chris Freda, DaQuante Timbers and Anthony Chau.
Going 5-0 for the Eagles on the weekend were Matt Allison, Cody Hamm, Brendan Kammerdeiner, Chris Freda, and DaQuante Timbers, who was also recognized for being the first person in school history, and one of very few wrestlers state wide to ever achieve 100 pins in a career.

Eagles clinch share of district title
FHS report: The Freedom Eagles wrapped up at least a share of their third consecutive regular season district title by sweeping a pair of AAA Cedar Run District matches. The Eagles defeated defending Cedar Run District champion Osbourn, 40-22, and defeated Stonewall Jackson, 55-12. The Eagles can secure sole possession of first place with a win over Broad Run on Jan. 25 at the Wrestle for the Cure, Ashburn Duals. Double winners for the Eagles on the night were Anthony Chau (106), Matt Allison (126), Tyler Beck (152), Patrick Haggerty (170), Tyler Young (182), Brendan Kammerdeiner (195) and DaQuante Timbers (285).
Cassada extends streak
LV report: The walking-wounded Loudoun Valley Viking wrestling team lost to Potomac Falls and Loudoun County. A big Congratulations to Josh Cassada for setting a school record with 25 straight wins and counting at the 160 lb weight class. Going undefeated for the Vikes were Josh Hawk and Sid Beyers. Joey Bogash and Zach Gingras scored individual victories for the team. Also our Georgian exchange student Omiko scored a varsity victory to tighten up the match, filling in for injured wrestler David Garvis.
Huskies make mat gains
THS report: The Tuscarora Huskies wrestled against Briar Woods and host Woodgrove, falling 48-30 to Briar Woods and 54-27 against Woodgrove. This is the second year open for both Tuscarora and Woodgrove and both teams are making great gains. Tuscarora had several wrestlers go 2-0 for the night: Alex McCord, Saxon Downs, Alejandro Avelar, Dionte Fitts and Ryan Fleming.

Freedom in Wolverine Duals
FHS report: The Eagles suffered their first Dual Meet loss of the year, but not before rattling off four straight solid victories in route to an anticipated finals matchup with AA State Powerhouse New Kent. Though New Kent ultimately won a hard fought 40-35 win over the Eagles, the match was not without a ton of excitement, and Freedom came home with a second place trophy. After a flurry of pins in the first four matches the score stood at 24-0, when senior Andrew Nelson took the mat. After gaining a 2-0 advantage over his opponent, Nelson once again took down the New Kent wrestler and would eventually turn and pin him, giving the Eagles their first win of the match. After Patrick Haggerty’s technical fall, and Tyler Young’s decision at 182, it was junior Brendan Kammerdeiner who would once again bring Eagle fans to their feet. His first period pin, closed the gap to a 24-20 lead in favor of New Kent. After Chris Freda’s battle to pin his opponent resulted in only a decision Freedom’s All American DaQuante Timbers snatched the lead from New Kent with his 2nd period pin, 29-24. After a tactical forfeit to Freedom’s defending District Champion at 106, which gave the Eagles a 35-24 lead going into the final three matches. Unfortunately for the Eagles they were shut out in the final three, and ultimately suffered a 35-30 defeat, despite splitting the matches evenly seven apiece. In the other matches on the day the Eagles defeated typical AA State Powerhouse Poquoson 61-9, before beating Mount Vernon 50-16. In their 3rd match, the Eagles surprised Vineland New Jersey with a 45-27 win, before beating Richmond’s J.R. Tucker 52-24.

Vikings sweep tri-match
LV report: The Valley wrestling team defeated Briar Woods and Dominion. Josh Cassada and David Garvis went 2-0 and continued to lead the team. Marcus Oden and Sid Beyers were also undefeated on the night and came up huge for the Vikings. Briar Woods wrestled very hard and the match was very even, but big last-minute victories from Caleb Trump (285) and Derek Raschid gave the Valley team a 1-point victory, 39-38.

Eagles sweep tri-match
FHS report: The Eagles kicked off Cedar Run District competition against Battlefield and Patriot high schools. The Eagles defeated a very game Battlefield team 43-18 to start the evening before handling Patriot, 66-6, in the later match. Double winners on the evening were: Dua Silva (120), Matt Allison (126), Cody Hamm (138), Tyler Beck (152), Tyler Young (182), Brendan Kammerdeiner (195), Chris Freda (220), DaQuante Timbers (285).

Panthers tie for third, Vikings are 13th at Willie Waters Invitational
LVHS report: Josh Cassada was Champion in the 160 lb weight class. He wrestled extremely solid and soundly won each match, even his final match was won with a major decision. He was no doubt the LV team MVP. David Garvis was third after losing to Haverford Schols Beast of the East place winner in the semis. Garvis got back on track after the loss and pinned each of his next three opponents for a third place finish.

Wednesday, Dec. 28
Eagles place fifth
FHS report: On December 27-28, the Eagle Army would once again take the show on the road as they would travel to Maryland for the Arundel Holiday Classic. Though the Eagles were missing four starters over the holiday break they made a strong showing finishing 5th in the 14-team field, which included Maryland Prep powerhouses - Georgetown Prep, DeMatha and Archbishop Spalding.
The Eagles placed eight individuals in the top 6 including Matt Curry (6th) at 113, Matt Allison (6th) at 126, Dua Silva (4th) at 120 and Brendan Kammerdeiner, who has been coming on strong as of late with his 3rd Place finish. The Eagles upper weights were strong throughout the course of the tournament as four Eagles made the finals match.
At 170lbs, Pat Haggerty won a series of three tough matches before being pinned in the finals by Georgetown Prep’s Troy Murtha, who finished 8th at this years prestigious Beast of the East.
At 182lbs, Tyler Young made the finals by winning a close 3-2 decision over Georgetown Prep’s State Place Winner Ryan Smith in the semifinals. In the finals Young lost a closely contested 3-2 decision in which Young nearly had Spalding’s D.J. Smith taken down in the finals seconds, but Smith avoided the take down out of bounds to preserve the win.
At 220lbs Freedom’s Chris Freda cruised to the finals dominating all of his opponents until the finals where he would meet defending Maryland State Runner Up Pat Hyde of North County. Freda would push the action for the majority of the match but was not able to overcome an early takedown by Hyde, and lost the match 5-3. This was Freda’s second appearance in the finals of this tournament.
Finally, at 285, DaQuante Timbers kept his outstanding season going by dominating a weight class that had a pair of State Place Winners in its ranks. Though Timbers’ first opponent opted to forfeit rather than wrestle him, he dominated his second opponent in just 37 seconds. In the final, Timbers defeated Georgetown Prep’s Ryan Schneider 9-2, giving Schneider both of his points on escapes.

Freedom sweeps meet
FHS report: Freedom kicked off its dual schedule at Brentsville High School. The Eagles squared off against both Heritage and host Brentsville in nondistrict competition. The Eagles began the night by dominating Heritage in an 80-0 victory, before taking on host Brentsville, currently ranked 6th in the State for AA competition.
The Eagles who have moved up to AAA for the first time this year were no strangers to the Tigers. Both the Tigers and the Eagles were Region II teams a year ago, with the Tigers slightingly edging out the Eagles in the Region II wrestling tournament to finish in 3rd place.
In what would turn out to be a close affair the Tigers jumped out to a commanding start, winning the first three weight classes from the Eagles to take a 12-0 lead. The Eagles’ Matt Allison would quickly turn the momentum in the Eagles favor when he pinned the Tigers Jordan Garcia in just 56 seconds. Allison’s pins set off a flurry of four straight pins for the Eagles, as Levi Hamm, Cody Hamm, and Andy Hinrichs all followed Allison with pins of their own. At 152 pounds, the Eagles Tyler Beck expanded the lead to 28-12 with a 14-3 major decision over Billy Cornwell.
After dropping a tough decision at 160lbs the Eagles would battle back at 170 lbs when Pat Haggerty scored a 12-3 major decision over Atal Naim, setting up a huge match at 182lbs. In a battle of State Qualifiers from a year ago, Freedom’s Tyler Young (ranked #5 in AAA) battled against William Prados (ranked #6 in AA). Young scored first with a takedown in the first period and would hold on for a 2-1 decision over Prados, that would seal the win for the Eagles.

LV report: The Valley wrestling team defeated Park View, 36-33, and Tuscarora, 48-27. Going 2-0 for the Vikings were Marcus Oden, Zac Gingras, Vincent Gugliotta, Josh Cassada, David Garvis and Jimmy Vandervelt. Some key victories for the Viking team were secured by Lucas Kilgore, Sid Beyers and Joey Bogash. The Vikings will be home this Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
THS report: The Huskies faced off against Loudoun Valley and Park View last night. Tuscarora lost to Loudoun Valley, 48-33, and Park View, 69-12. Alex McCord and Saxon Downs both went 2-0 for the Huskies.

Huskies win twice at Raider Duals
THS report: The Tuscarora Huskies wrestling team was at Loudoun County on Saturday for the Raider Duals Wrestling tournament. We went 2-3 with wins over George Mason (48-36) and Briar Woods (42-42 a win under Criteria H - most 1st period Takedowns). Losses were to Loudoun County (52-24), Robert E. Lee (49-27) and Heritage (41-32).
Alex McCord took team MVP with 4 wins and 1 loss to Heritage for the day. Thomas Jackson had 3 wins, 2 losses to Robert E Lee and George Mason. Dionte Fitts had the team’s fastest pin of 11 seconds and went 3 wins, 2 losses to Loudoun County and Robert E Lee. Jack Lord went 3 and 2 with losses to Loudoun County and Briar Woods.
Compared to last years’ Raider Duals where Tuscarora went 0-5, I felt that Saturday was a success. We have been steadily improving and we are only getting better. With Captains Garrett Mastria, Dionte Fitts, and Thomas Jackson leading the team on the mat they get improve each tournament. We also have freshmen on the team with experience that will lead the team in future years, Alex McCord (106) and Saxon Downs (113).
Freedom wins Lou Nagy title
FHS report: The Eagles varsity team defended their Lou Nagy Invitational Championship, winning the tournament for the 3rd consecutive year. The Eagles dominated the field - finishing more than 100 points ahead of 2nd place Stuarts Draft. The Eagles finished with 13 of their 14 wrestlers placing in the top 4, and placed 9 individuals in the finals. The Eagles walked away with 6 individual champions.
106: Anthony Chau was untested the entire weekend as he pinned his way through the tournament, including his finals opponent.
120: Dua Silva won his first ever tournament title by tech falling Stuarts Draft’s Jesse Smallwood in the final. Silva reached the finals on the back of two pins, including his semifinal match against Tristian Bailey of Broadway
138: Cody Hamm became the Eagles 3rd individual champion when he pinned Broadway’s Tyler Torkelson in the finals. Hamm reached the finals with a 8-0 decision over a game Tyler Colvin of Fort Defiance.
145: Andrew Hinrichs may have scored the Eagles most impressive win of the tournament when he won a 10-2 decision over AA State Qualifier Brett Talley of Stuarts Draft. The Eagle sophomore, was up 4-2 in the final period before turning Talley twice in the final period to secure the win.
170: Patrick Haggerty used a pair of pins to secure a place in the finals before beating Waynesboro’s Kahwan Veney 10-3 in the finals.
182: Tyler Young had a very impressive day by defeating a pair of State Qualifiers from a year ago. His first was a 15-2 decision over Stuarts Draft’s Sam Veney and the second was a pin over Harrisonburg’s Brad Johnson in the finals.

Timbers is sixth at Beast of the East
FHS report: DaQuante Timbers competed at the Beast of the East. This is the #1 tournament in the country and DaQuante’s 6th place finish assured him of national attention. Timbers (who is currently ranked the #16 Senior Heavyweight in the country by USA Wrestling Magazine) cruised through his first two matches reaching the quarterfinals with pins over Mitch Ward of Middletown PA and Allan Beattie of Kiski, PA.
In the quarters, Timbers received a set back when he lost to Delaware State Champion Dink Purnell, before bouncing back to win his next two matches. Timbers’ next match against Cape Henlop Delaware’s Thomas Ott, was a battle of two state medal winners. Timbers carried a slight lead going into the third period beforing turning Ott to his back for a pin in the third.
In his next match Timbers faced Germantown Academy’s Chuck Boddy a recent Bucknell University Wrestling Commit. After falling behind 1-0 early in the second period Timbers scored a takedown to take the lead for good before pinning Boddy in the second period, and assuring Timbers of a top 6 finish.
After a loss to eventual 3rd Place Finisher Michael Johnson of Wyoming Seminary (a national runner up), Timbers’ bounced back by wrestling tough against Zach Dawe of Pleasant Valley Utah. The State Medal winner from Utah fell behind Timbers and was in bad shape, losing 6-1 before he was injured and could not continue the match with 30 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, the injury was a result of an illegal move applied by Timbers and as a result Dawe elected not to finish the match and win by default.
Overall, Timbers weekend was a huge success as he cemented himself as one of the top high school heavyweights in the country. Timbers becomes the only wrestler from Loudoun County to place at the Beast of the East.
Freedom J.V. place first
FHS report: The Eagle J.V. wrestling team competed at Broad Run High School in Ashburn and had an outstanding performance overall. The Eagles finished in 1st place in the bracketed individual tournament after placing 24 individuals in the top 4 of the tournament. The Eagles also had four individual tournament champions in Noah Carney, Tyler Beck, Jason Cardozo and Truman Davenport.

Valley places seventh
LV report: Loudoun Valley placed seventh at its first tournament of the year. Josh Cassada was the champion of the 160-pound weight class and Davis Garvis wrestled a stellar finals match against a two-time W. Va. state champion at the 182-pound class. Other place winners for the Vikings included Derek Raschid, Josh Hawk, Zac Gingras, Brendan McGurk, Clark Cucinell, Paul Van Winkle, Sid Beyers and Caleb Trump. Valley will wrestle Central Square (N.Y.) this Thursday in a benefit match with all proceeds going to Blue Ridge Hospice.
Freedom places fifth
FHS report: The Eagles had another strong showing at one of the oldest tournaments in Virginia, finishing fifth among 33 teams at the NOVA Classic. The Eagles put two individuals into the finals. Tyler Young (182) lost a heartbreaking match in quadruple overtime to the defending prep state champion from Paul VI, before DaQuante Timbers once again ran his way through the tournament by pinning all of his opponents. Timbers is now 9-0 on the year. Other Eagles making strong showings were Matt Allison (7th at 132), Anthony Chau (4th at 106), and Chris Freda who made the semifinals but then had to default through the rest of the tournament, as he was not able to compete in day 2. The Eagles will next wrestle at the Lou Nagy Memorial Tournament in Broadway. The tournament is named in honor of head coach Kent Nagy’s late father.

Freedom finishes sixth
FHS report: Freedom Wrestled in the Prestigious Elite Opener. The Eagles competed in a 12-team field which included both the defending AA and AAA state champions. The Eagles placed 6th, only 8 points behind defending Region II Champion Fauquier for 4th place. Many Eagle wrestlers had outstanding starts to the year as Matt Allison (126), Andrew Nelson (160), Tyler Young (182), and Chris Freda (220) all finished 3rd for the Eagles. Also placing in the top 6 was Antony Chau (6th), Cody Hamm (5th), and Patrick Haggerty (5th). DaQuante Timbers was the Eagles’ lone champion, as he pinned all of his opponents on the weekend, including the defending AAA runner up.
