Freedom High School made a compelling statement as to why it has already won a share of the AAA Cedar Run District wrestling title with its performance at the Loudoun Valley Duals Jan. 21-22 in Purcellville.
The Eagles posted a 7-1 record, including a 39-33 win against a difficult Washington (W. Va.) squad.
“We already have a piece of the regular season district title,” Freedom coach Kent Nagy said. “But we want to make it just ours.”
Freedom will have that chance Jan. 25 when it faces host Broad Run at the Wrestle for the Cure event.
The Spartans also posted a 7-1 record at the Loudoun Valley Duals, losing only to Washington on Saturday. Broad Run scored more than 60 points in victories against both Osbourn and Heritage.
Freedom was led in the duals by senior DaQuante Timbers, the top ranked Group AAA heavyweight in Virginia. Timbers posted an 8-0 record on the weekend, including three pins. Timbers now holds the school record for most wins at 135-11, with more than 100 pins.
Senior Chris Freda also contributed crucial wins in the 220-pound weight class, including a 6-5 comeback victory in the match against Washington.
Although Loudoun Valley only won three team matches, junior Josh Cassada continued on his record-breaking streak. Earlier in the week, the 160-pound Cassada broke the school record for consecutive wins, set in 1978 with 24. After his eight victories at the tournament, he is now at 37 consecutive wins.
Valley senior Josh Hawk won his 100th career match at the duals.
Heritage and Potomac Falls notched three wins a piece, with the Pride narrowly defeating both Berkeley Springs and Osbourn by one-point margins.
Potomac Falls wrestler Batchka Zulkhuu went 7-1, getting pinned by Cosby’s Greg Delano. Zulkhuu is currently ranked second in the state for Group AA.
“He’s fun to watch,” Potomac Falls coach Mike Grafton said of his 152-pounder. “You only get to coach one Batchka in your life.”

Cassada continues his steak winning all 8, now at 37-0. Also a junior, looks strong headed into post season.
Patriot’s Anthony Olsen also won 3 matches and is now 30-0 on the year at 170. NOBODY can beat this guy, and he’s only a junior.
Yes, we will post results Monday.
Will the results of the rounds be posted somewhere?
DQ Timbers from Freedom broke the school record for wins last night against Patriot. He is now 135-11 for his career with over 100 career pins.
With his 3 pins yesterday, Micah Skubon has 90 for his high school career at Washington HS. He hopes to make 100 in his final senior year.
Cassada @ 160 has set a school record for consecutive wins. The record set in 1978 was 24 wins, Cassada is now at 29 wins and counting. Good Luck!
