Woodgrove High School honored seniors Matthew Reed and JJ Sarty Nov. 9 as the student-athletes signed their letters of intent to play collegiate baseball. The college signing celebration - held in the library - was the first for the second-year Purcellville school.

Reed, a unanimous first team All-Dulles District catcher last spring, has committed to Clemson University, an Atlantic Coast Conference school in South Carolina.

Woodgrove baseball coach Brad Bauder describes Reed as “an excellent receiver behind the plate who stifles opposing running attacks with a quick release and excellent throwing arm. Matthew is also an outstanding offensive player who hits for power and average and runs very well.”

Sarty, a first team All-Dulles District second baseman in 2011, will take the diamond for the College of William & Mary, a Division I program in Williamsburg.

“Sarty is both an outstanding student and athlete who is driven to succeed both on and off the field,” Bauder stated. “[He] is a five-tool player who hits for both average and power and possesses outstanding speed and base running skills. He is also an accomplished middle infielder who demonstrates outstanding range, hands, and arm strength.”

The Wolverines produced a 12-9 record in its inaugural season and finished tied for fourth place in the AA Dulles District. Woodgrove did not have a senior class last school year.
