Letters to the Editor

This time last year the School Board and the Board of Supervisors were running on platforms supportive of our public schools. The first action taken by the new School Board was to cut kindergarten, cut personnel for a new high school, cut transportation, and cut foreign languages in the elementary schools. Now the new Board of Supervisors is threatening to make all cuts in the next county budget fall exclusively on the school side of the ledger.

The total projected cuts are $68 million despite the opening of new schools and an additional 2,000 new students. Also, we have just been made aware that the new School Board does not want to know what the public thinks as they have cut from the online LCPS Community Input Survey a question regarding possible public support for higher taxes to support our growing school system. Why don’t they give the public a chance to weigh in on this important issue? What are they afraid of in asking this valid survey question?

Perhaps Dr Hatrick will have to make some tough choices instead of passing the buck off to others(taxpayers, teachers, kids). I bet there are few chiefs LCPS could do without.
