Letters to the Editor

I am writing to express my anguish and deep disappointment in Republican controlled Congress in delaying funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) - which has been a Bi-partisan initiative since 1997 and which covers around 9 Million Children nationwide and 68,500 Children in Virginia.

CHIP provides Low-Cost Insurance to Children whose parents make more money to qualify for Medicaid and not enough to afford other Insurance programs. The Department of Medical Assistance Services (The Agency that administers CHIP - Called FAMIS in Virginia) sent out letters on Dec 11th to the parents of the 68,500 children currently enrolled in CHIP across Virginia ( Including around 10,000 in our 10th Congressional District) that unless Congress acts immediately, coverage could be terminated as temporary funding for the program would run out on 1/31/2018 as the program lapsed on Sept 30th, 2017.

I cannot imagine the hardships the concerned parents are going through thinking about their Children’s health situation and not knowing, if the program would continue. I am appalled by the Congressional Republican leadership’s misplaced priority in pushing thru the Deficit swelling $ 1.4 Trillon Tax Cut bill and not renewing in time, an important program that insures Children - who are the future of our great nation. No one knows for sure whether the massive tax cut bill would produce the projected economic growth but one would think that it would be crystal clear that Healthy Kids would make our Nation’s future bright.

I would like to quote what Sen Hatch (R-Utah) said in 1997 when Co-sponsoring the original program with Sen Kennedy (D-Massachusetts) saying “as a nation, as a society, we have a moral responsibility” to provide coverage for the most vulnerable children.

While there is talk of the Tax cut being the biggest present for this Christmas - I cannot help but wonder that thousands of Children and their families would be thinking of the Grinch.

I sincerely hope Congress reauthorizes CHIP now and for a longer term.

All these leeches were just moved into another tax bracket and will be able to pay for their own kids health care.
