Delegate wants special session to repeal abuser fees

State Del. Robert Marshall (R-south-central Loudoun) is asking that a special session of the Virginia General Assembly be held to repeal the abuser fees that are being charged to those who commit serious traffic offenses.

The heavily criticized fees, which went into effect July 1 and can exceed $1,000 were created as part of the state's new transportation plan signed by Gov. Tim Kaine (D) in April. Money collected will be spent on road and transit improvements statewide.

"Turning police into gun packing tax collectors is a disservice to Virginia's dedicated public safety personnel," Marshall wrote in his letter sent to other state lawmakers asking they back his request.

The governor can call a special session when two-thirds of the General Assembly ask that one be held, Marshall wrote.

One online petition of those opposed to the fees had more than 123,000 signatures on it as of July 18.
