Wolf sends letter to SCC opposing power lines

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-10th) has released a letter to the Virginia State Corporation Commission concerning the construction of huge high-voltage power lines across much of Northern Virginia by Dominion Power.

Wolf has been an outspoken critic of Dominion Power's plans since they were announced. He also has been critical of efforts to create “National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors” without greater input from the communities that could be negatively impacted.

Below is the text of the letter addressed to Mark C. Christie of the State Corporation Commission.

Dear Judge Christie:

I write today to share my concerns about a request filed by Dominion Power Company and Allegheny Power for permits to construct a transmission line from the West Virginia border to the Arcola Substation in Loudoun County.

This proposed line would cross parts of Frederick, Clarke, Warren, Fauquier, Loudoun and Prince William counties in the 10th Congressional District of Virginia which I represent.

I am extremely concerned about the impact of a major transmission route over lands in Northern Virginia for which millions of federal, state, local and private dollars have been spent to protect and preserve.  The importance of the historic, environmental, scenic and cultural landscapes in this region is unparalleled.

Additionally, I would like to bring to your attention the enclosed article from the Wall Street Journal detailing efforts by power companies to encourage efficient energy consumption through innovative pricing, new technology and educational programs. I find it noteworthy that Virginia’s power companies are not engaged in these cost-saving measures for the consumers they serve.

I ask that this be taken into consideration during your hearing and examination process to permit new facilities that could endanger neighborhoods, the state’s tourism economy and its rich cultural and historic resources. Thank you for your consideration.

Frank R. Wolf

Member of Congress
