Countywide

Loudoun ranks fifth

Loudoun County ranks No. 5 in job growth on Money Magazine's annual ranking of the best places to live in the United States.

Job growth in Loudoun, from 2000 to 2006, jumped 51.3 percent.

"D.C. suburbs are enjoying yet another sonic boom," said the magazine, "and Loudoun County is in the forefront with its wealth of developable land.

"Private industry is buying in and there has been an explosion in government-related development driving growth in defense and biomedical industries. The population has grown more than 30 percent this decade."

Tooele County, Utah, ranks first in job growth. Money Magazine cited that county as being "near full employment" because of a "blossoming" scientific and technical industry, bolstered by several mines in the area.

Child-care business class

There is a shortage of child-care providers in Loudoun, and “The Business of Family Child Care” seminar on Aug. 1 will go over the ins and outs of this in-demand industry. Topics to be covered: business licensing requirements, state licensing, voluntary registration, local zoning, liability insurance and USDA Food Reimbursement.

The class will take place at the Loudoun County Extension Office, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The registration fee is $10 to cover the resource manual provided to participants. For information, call Beverly Samuel in the Loudoun County Extension Office at 703-777-0373.

Dulles

From Loudoun to Baghdad

At the beginning of July, Dulles-based SkyLink Air and Logistics Support USA Inc. finished moving a 15,000-kilo energy transformer to Baghdad for the rebuilding of the Baghdad Al-Doura power plant. The transformer will help provide more than 1.5 million Iraqi citizens with additional electrical power. One of 29 operational power plants across Iraq, Al-Doura functions as the sole major power plant in Baghdad. The new energy transformer will augment the city’s grid by 280 megawatts per day. New moving agreement

Sterling-based All-PRO Moving and Transfer, an agent for Paul Arpin Van Lines, has announced an agreement with Great Canadian Van Lines Ltd.

All-PRO, in business since 1995 and located next to Washington Dulles International Airport, provides local and long-distance moving services.

The new interline alliance will also allow smaller cross-border shipments to larger hub centers such as Toronto and Vancouver.

"This is a total win-win situation because both companies [Arpin, Great Canadian] will expand their markets and networks across the U.S./Canadian border," said Hugh Millar, president of All-PRO.
