Leesburg man guilty of rape
Abraham Williams, 45, was found guilty of the crimes for incidents that occurred in October 2006. The victim, whose identity has not been released, testified that the two sexual assaults occurred at her home over a weekend, Plowman said. She also said Williams smoked crack cocaine before each assault.During the sentencing phase of the trial, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Adriana Eberle convinced jurors to recommend a 30-year prison sentence for Williams. In her argument, she reminded the jury of Williams' prior felony record, which includes burglary, grand larceny and possession of cocaine. Eberle also talked about a history of abuse between Williams and the victim, Plowman said.
Plowman said he was happy with the jury's recommendation.
"These matters must always be handled very delicately," he said. "Because of the sensitive nature of the crimes coupled with an elevated emotional factor, effective presentation is always challenging."
Williams will be sentenced July 18 at 1 p.m. by Judge Herman A. Whisenant.
