Sterling Middle School teacher charged with being drunk in school
A Loudoun County middle school teacher was charged Nov. 1 with being intoxicated in a public school, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said.
Personnel from Sterling Middle School contacted the Sheriff’s Office shortly before 11 a.m. regarding a teacher who was in the school and was believed to be drunk. An investigation conducted by a Loudoun Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer concluded the teacher was under the influence of alcohol, Troxell said.
Mary Ann Livoti, 56, of Hamilton, was taken into custody and charged with being drunk in public, Troxell said. She remains held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. She has been placed on paid administrative leave by Loudoun County Public Schools.
LCPS spokesman Wayde Byard said that placing a teacher who is under investigation on paid leave is standard procedure. That way, the investigation by the Sheriff's Office is not prejudiced.
Livoti has been a teacher with LCPS for about 13 years, Byard said. She worked with the system from 1978 to 1982, then came back in 1998. She has worked at Sterling Middle School since 2000 as the reading specialist, Byard said.
The circumstances surrounding why personnel felt Livoti might be intoxicated are not being released until the investigation is over, Byard said.
The case remains under investigation and will be reviewed by the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney to determine if there will be further charges.
