Staph infections reported in Loudoun
Two cases of the drug-resistant staphylococcus infection that killed a teenager in Bedford County have been reported in Loudoun County schools.Wayde Byard, spokesman for the county schools, said the cases are treatable and not serious.
The teacher and middle school student found to be infected are not from the same school in the district. The names of the schools or individuals are not being released.
“We scrub down our schools with a non-ammonia E pA-approved cleaner,” Byard said. “The most important thing we can enforce within the schools is hand washing.”
In light of recent media attention to the infection, schools and locker rooms are being re-checked and disinfected.
Schools have soapless hand sanitizers in every classroom, and everyone is encouraged to use them. Byard said school nurses have also checked on recent infections to make sure none have developed into a staph infection -- so far, all have been negative.
Schools continue to enforce a standing policy that forbids student athletes from sharing equipment. The policy also states that any athlete with a skin lesion must get clearance from a doctor before returning to participate with the team.
Full-time athletic trainers are on hand to ensure that equipment is kept clean and that students seek proper attention regarding wounds that could develop the infection.
Times-Mirror staff writer Shannon Sollinger contributed to this report.
