EPA meeting on Broad Run Farms' well woes

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is holding a public meeting Oct. 24, 7 to 9 p.m. at Galilee United Methodist Church in Sterling, to answer questions and receive public input on a proposal to add the Hidden Lane landfill to the National Priorities List.

If approved, it will be Loudoun's first Superfund site.

The church is at 45425 Winding Road, just west of Dulles Town Center on the north side of Route 7.

Wells in Broad Run Farms, just west of the landfill, have tested positive since 1989 for trichloroethylene, a degreasing solvent that can produce significant health problems.

The county's Health Department has tested 69 wells since March 2005, and found TCE contamination in 24. The plume of contamination may be moving to the Potomac River floodplain.

The public meeting is the first step in the EPA's process of making the landfill eligible for its Superfund cleanup program.

Check back here on Thursday for a report on the meeting.
