Bosse follows suit in family of golfers

Zack Bosse grew up around the game of golf.

His parents, Gail and Marty, and older brothers, Josh and Danny, are avid golfers.

“My dad was big into golf. He raised all the kids in the family to golf,” said Zack, 16, a rising junior at Loudoun Valley High School.

“Growing up on the golf course and growing up in a family of golfers, I just fell in line with the family and started golfing. I started getting progressively better. I guess here I am now.”

Following in his brothers' footsteps as a member of the Viking golf team, Zack Bosse stepped to the forefront last fall when he topped the best golfers the eight Cedar Run District schools had to offer.

Bosse shot a 76 at Fauquier Springs Country Club in Warrenton to capture the individual district title. Bosse and his teammates went on to win the Northwest Region team championship to qualify for the Virginia AAA tournament.

The family outings on the golf course have obviously paid dividends. The Bosses reside in the Stoneleigh development of Round Hill and are members at Stoneleigh Golf and Country Club.

“That's how I practice golf, by playing with them,” Zack Bosse said. “So I guess I owe it to my family the skill I have now.”

Zack admits that Danny, a 2007 Loudoun Valley graduate and current member of the Cornell University golf team, is “probably” the best in the family.

“I'll beat him some times, but most of the time he'll beat me. But it's still fun,” Zack said. “I can win most of the time against everyone else, but not every time.”

After playing every day during the off season -- or at least taking some practice swings in the garage depending on the weather forecast -- Bosse is excited to tee off his junior season Aug. 6, when the Vikings take part in the Curly Licklider Memorial at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club in Front Royal.

“I'd like to help the team go to states again,” Bosse said. “We went last year but didn't place so well. I would really love to take the team back there. I'd like to retain my district title, but I'm going to have to work really hard to do that.”

Bosse, a long-ball hitter, loves to go for the gusto off the tee and admits his most admired stroke is a well-struck tee shot.

“My game is pretty much a bomb and gouge,” he explained. “If the hole is short enough, I'll hit the driver down there. It doesn't matter if I hit the fairway. I'd rather have a shorter chip up than a longer fairway shot to the hole. That's the kind of game I play. A smart golfer really isn't in my bag, although sometimes when it's necessary, I'll try.”

Whether he's booming a 300-yard drive or finding a way to knock a pitching wedge close to the pin out of the rough, Bosse is always striving to improve.

“I want to play well,” Bosse said. “I want people to know who I am. I want to play in college. Not necessarily be the next Tiger Woods, I just want to be recognized as a kid that can play.”

It's evident this kid certainly can play.
