Briefs: Crime site, community rankings, new job, health survey
Sheriff's Office offers new way to track crimes onlineThe Loudoun's Sheriff’s Office is the first agency in Virginia to join forces with CrimeReports.com to allow residents to go online and view recent crimes in their community.
Residents can see local crime data in near real-time by going to www.crimereports.com and typing in an address, ZIP Code, or town and state.
The information is presented on Google Maps and allows users to review up-to-date crime information for any location under the jurisdiction of the Sheriff's Office.
Residents also can receive e-mail alerts when crimes occur.
The system does not reflect incidents of rape, sexual assault, crimes against children, domestic violence and calls that are medical in nature.
The service is free.
Rankings exclude Loudoun
Loudoun County was shut out of Money Magazine's latest Best Places To Live rankings for small cities.
In 2003, Sugarland Run topped the list to much fanfare.
This year, four communities in Fairfax County – Burke, Hunter Hill, Reston and Sully – made the list, which ranks localities based on affordable housing, crime rate, jobs and quality of schools.
Plymouth, Minn., near Minneapolis, topped the magazine's rankings this year, with nearby Columbia, Md., placing eighth.
See money.cnn.com to view the complete list.
Budget director leaving
Ari Sky, Loudoun County’s budget director, is leaving his position to serve as budget director for Fauquier County.
Sky worked for Loudoun for 11 years. A replacement has not yet been chosen.
Sky was selected over 45 other applicants for his new job, said Fauquier's Deputy County Administrator Tony Hooper.
His last day at work in Loudoun is Aug. 28.
Health survey available
The county's Health Department is still encouraging residents to take part in its first countywide health-needs assessment.
Residents can fill out the survey at healthcheck.surveyconsole.com.
The Health Department will use the results to make recommendations to county officials and private practices on filling health-care gaps in Loudoun.
