Tarara white wine stars at West Coast event

Tarara Winery, north of Leesburg on the banks of the Potomac River, attracts wine lovers (and jazz aficionados and asparagus hounds and raspberry gourmets) from all over Northern Virginia every weekend. Now people on the West Coast will get a chance to sample this popular winery's product.

For the last weekend in August, Tarara's 2007 Pinot Gris will be on the menu at Slow Food Nation's Sustainable Wine Bar at the 50,000-square-foot pier at Fort Mason in San Francisco.

According to Slow Food Nation, the Pinot Gris promises to "sip well" in the hot summer weather and to pair happily with the regional foods at the event. The white wine is one of fewer than 500 nationwide that will be offered at the event.

Slow Food Nation's largest-ever celebration of American food will include samples of beer, bread, charcuterie, cheese, chocolate, coffee, fish, honey and preserves, ice cream, native foods, olive oil, spirits, tea and wine. Tarara's white wine was chosen, according to the winery, because the winery practices the Slow Food Nation values of "good, clean and fair wine," and because the winery exemplifies the philosophies of taste education, defending biodiversity and building food communities.

Back at Tarara, two summer concerts remain on the 2008 slate – The Reflex Aug. 23, and The Grandsons Aug. 30. The Great Grape Festival takes over the 475-acre property Sept. 20-21, and Tarara wines will be available at the Lucketts Fair Aug. 23-24.

Contact Tarara at 703-771-7100, or go to www.tarara.com. See www.slowfoodnation.org for more on the San Francisco event.
