Suspected cock fighting investigated near Lovettsville
Hundreds of fowl suspected of being used for animal fighting have been seized from two homes near Lovettsville.
On Dec. 14, Loudoun County Animal Control and the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office searched a property in the 38000 block of Sierra Lane, south of Lovettsville, and seized several hundred birds that may have been used for animal fighting, Animal Control spokeswoman Laura Rizer said.
The next day, they searched a property in the 12000 block of Berlin Turnpike, north of Lovettsville, and seized more than 100 birds that also may have been used for fighting, Rizer said.
No one knows yet if the two incidents are related, and both investigations or ongoing. No charges have been filed yet, Rizer said.
Animal fighting is a Class 6 felony in Virginia and is punishable by one to five years in prison and/or a fine of up to $2,500.
"The Humane Society of the United States provided intelligence and training to Animal Control and the Sheriff's Office that assisted in launching the investigation of the alleged animal fighting operation(s)," Rizer stated.
