Week-old guardrail saves mail truck from fall
A newly installed guardrail saved a mailman from flipping down an embankment July 11 near Paeonian Springs.
Paul G. McIntyre, 51, a Leesburg resident and contractor for the U.S. Postal Service, was at a mailbox on Charles Town Pike near Simpson Circle Friday around 5:15 p.m. when his vehicle was hit by a 1996 Chevrolet, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said.
Brian DeVaux, who saw the activity from his Paeonian Grocery and Gourmet nearby, said McIntyre's vehicle was pinned against a guardrail in the crash. He said without the guardrail, the mail truck would have flipped down the embankment.
The guardrail had just been installed by the Virginia Department of Transportation the week before to protect drivers from the embankment, DeVaux said.
“It's the one time VDOT did something and it's already proving to help the community,” DeVaux said.
After the crash, the Chevrolet, driven by Christopher D. Brownlee, 47, of Hamilton, continued down the road for several hundred feet before stopping, Troxell said.
Brownlee was charged with driving under the influence, Troxell said. The DUI offense was his second in five years.
No one was injured.
